The original text of this translation commentary is selected from The Scar written by Mary Cregan(1956-).The author recalls her feelings and experience of depression, and through hospital records and narration from close relatives, she describes her delusional frame of mind as realistically as possible. She hopes to find answers to longpuzzling questions, and to provide useful suggestions and lessons for those afflicted with depression as well as their loved ones. The text uses various rhetorical devices to arouse readers’ sympathy. The translation of those figures of speech involved a lot of difficulties, and it is also the main topic the thesis will focus on.Although there are many similarities between English and Chinese in figures of speech,it is hard to reflect the rhetorical effect of the original text due to different cultures and different ways of thinking behind the two languages.Based on the rhetorical cases in the selected text, this thesis will examine how to use translation strategies flexibly in translating word meaning rhetoric and syntactic rhetoric. This thesis will also, under the guidance of the Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection, compare different versions of translation and discuss how to improve “degree of holistic adaptation and selection” by considering translation problems from multidimensional,multi-faceted and multi-level perspectives.By writing this thesis, the author learns more about the translation of figures of speech, and gains a better understanding of psychology and mental diseases. It is hoped that this thesis can provide some ideas for relevant translation issues.
