The intention of speech activities is the main factor that influencing communicative interactions. Participants of speech activities usually employ different expressive means to emphasis his or her true intentions. Expressive means of Chinese has many factors affecting speech activities. Chinese rhetoric devices, especially those with humorous effects, are widely used. This thesis discussed the humorous effects from a pragmatic perspective. On the one hand, the humorous effects of Chinese rhetoric devices are determined by their own language elements, on the other hand, by the pragmatic conditions they rely on. From the perspective of pragmatics, the humorous effects of Chinese rhetoric devices are determined by context, deixis, communicative implicature, speech act theory, relevance theory. presupposition theories and so on. By analyzing explaining the factors affecting the humorous effects of Chinese rhetoric devices, this thesis aims at improving the daily communicative competence of speech activities and communicative effects.
