Translation Report Of The Fiction Behold The Dreamers (Excerpts) In Light Of The Function Plus Loyalty Theory

The fiction Behold the Dreamers(Excerpts)is taken as the source text of this translation project.Imbolo Mbue,the writer of this fiction,based on the actual experiences of hers and her relatives and friends immigrating to America,through the narration perspective of third person,narrates an arduous,fantastic and compelling immigration story from the perspective of black immigration family of Jende Jonga.Black immigration,as a special social group,has gained a wide-ranging attention of the American government,all levels of social community and even the outside world.It can be of great help for us to know about the present social status and life situations of the blacks in America,and to make reasonable and comprehensive judgement towards invisible racialism issues,as well as to learn referencing experience for the reform and administration of China’s immigration institutions.However,the translated works on the “black immigration” at home are far from satisfying the demands and needs of Chinese readers and relevant personnel.Most scholars at home working in the translation research field,especially from the perspective of German Functionalist Approaches,pay little attention to conducting their translation studies on literary texts with subject like this.This translation practice is conducted under the guidance of Nord’s Function plus Loyalty Theory.The translator,in this report,analyzes and summarizes the features of the source text and makes a thorough case study at lexical,syntactic,discoursal and stylistic levels.In the case study,this report discusses the thoughts and methods for dealing with the difficulties at these four levels.The translator hopes that this report will be served as a translation case worthy of reference for later researchers when translating literary fictions with similar text features.Under the guidance of Nord’s Function plus Loyalty Theory,the translator adopts translation methods such as literal translation,annotation and conversion of part of speech to clearly,completely and accurately convey the words’ meanings to the target readers at lexical level;translation techniques including division,adjustment of sentence order and conversion of sentence voice are used to translate different types of long sentences in a smoother and more fluent way,making the translation conform to Chinese expression habit;at discoursal level,the translator mainly discusses the flexible treatment of cohesive devices to achieve coherence in the target text.And when translating interior monologues,methods used to reproduce the delicate inward descriptions for the target readers are to be discussed;at stylistic level,the translator mainly focuses on the translation of rhetorical devices.Translation methods such as idiomatic translation,abstraction and literal translation are applied to achieve the same rhetorical effect as the source text or enhance the expressive effect of the target text.
