A Report On The E-C Translation Of The End Of Everything(Astrophysically Speaking)(Excerpted) From The Perspective Of The Function Plus Loyalty Theory

With the improvement of educational level in today’s society,popular science books,as a medium for popularizing and disseminating scientific knowledge to the public,are becoming more and more popular,and the market for popular science books is increasingly rich.The introduction of foreign excellent popular science books can adapt to the market development and meet the increasingly diversified reading needs of domestic readers.This translation practice is selected from the astrophysical popular science book The End of Everything(Astrophysically Speaking).The book mainly explores five possible ways of the end of the universe,namely,Big Crunch,Heat Death,Big Rip,Vacuum Decay and Bounce.In this book,the author introduces the reader to the relevant knowledge in astrophysics such as the origin of the universe,quantum mechanics,string theory,etc.This book has a great number of subject-specific terms,complicated sentence structures,and strong logic.It belongs to an informative text with the reference function as the dominant function and the expressive and appellative functions as the auxiliary functions.Readability and acceptability are the key points in this translation practice.Therefore,this report,from the perspective of the Function plus Loyalty Theory,the translation-oriented theory of the German Functionalist School,analyzes the text from the lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.Each part is analyzed with specific cases to explore the translation strategies and methods of astrophysical popular science texts.This thesis argues that by analyzing the intended functions of the source text and the target text,and on the basis of accurately conveying the information of the original text,selecting appropriate translation strategies and methods can improve the readability and acceptability of the translation,thus improving the quality of the translation.It is hoped that the analysis of this report can provide references and useful solutions for the application of the theory of the Function plus Loyalty Theory and the translation of astrophysical popular science texts.
