A Report On The E-C Translation Of“A New Dimension Of Violence In Myanmar’s Rakhine State”Based On The Theory Of Function Plus Loyalty

The situation of Myanmar,as China’s neighbor,inevitably has a bearing on China’s border security and foreign policies.Therefore,Chinese politician and scholars follow the situation of Myanmar closely.Translation of related literature can provide information for Chinese scholars to do further research.The author was commissioned by a teacher of Guangxi University for Nationalities to translate a political essay entitled “A New Dimension of Violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine State”,which is taken from International Crisis Group Asia Briefing N°154 Brussels,24 January 2019.The translation will be published in ASEAN Reference,with a view to providing the latest international information for domestic scholars.This report,based on the translation project,is intended to make a systematic analysis from the perspective of Nord’s theory of “Function Plus Loyalty”.It first introduces the background and characteristics of the translation project,describes the translation process,and then gives an overview of the development of the German Functionalism and the application of Nord’s theory of “Function Plus Loyalty”(especially the application of documentary translation and instrumental translation),and makes case analysis and draws the conclusion.In the part of case analysis,under the guidance of Nord’s theory of function plus loyalty,some translation skills used in this translation practice are analyzed according to Nord’s strategies of documentary translation and instrumental translation with a view to summing up the experiences and lessons.It is found that the translation of political essays should not only keep the function of a political paper,but also be loyal to the original author and the target readers.So,the theory of “Function Plus Loyalty” can play a good guiding role in the translation of political essays.The translation of the political essays involvesboth documentary translation and instrumental translation.For documentary translation,the author mainly uses literal translation and philological translation to preserve the original image.To make the translation more readable,the author flexibly adopts instrumental translation by using four-character expressions,selecting proper diction,adding supplementary words necessary in the target language,changing the parts of speech,using rhetorical devices,changing the voice of the sentence and reorganizing long and complicated sentences.Documentary translation can retain the linguistic and cultural features of the original text,while instrumental translation makes it easier for readers to understand and make the translation more readable.In a word,analyzing the source text,understanding the function of the text and choosing appropriate translation theories and strategies can help us solve the problems in translation practice and enable the translation to play its intended functions.
