Objective:(1)To investigate the personality changes and mental health of adult epilepsy patients during the interval of epilepsy, and compare the changes with normal healthy population.(2)To find out the relevant factors affecting the personality and mental health of adult epilepsy patients in order to improve the quality of life of epilepsy patients.Methods:(1)We collected 164 clinically diagnosed adult patients with epilepsy from October 2019 to June 2022 who attended neurology clinics and inpatient clinics at Affiliated Hospital of Yangzhou University. We collected data on general conditions(age, sex, education level,Mini-mental State Examination(MMSE)),epilepsy related factors(family history, course of disease, seizure type, seizure frequency, aberrant state),drug treatment.(2)Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ)and Symptom Checklist90(SCL-90)were administered to 88 patients with epilepsy(observation group)and 100 healthy adults(control group)who met the criteria for inclusion. The general situation and EPQ and SCL-90 scores of the two groups were compared.(3)SPSS26.0 software was used for statistical processing. The measurement data was expressed as mean ± standard deviation(Mean ± SD),and the count data was expressed as frequency(percentage). For normally distributed data, independent sample t-test and chi-square test were used to analyze the difference between two groups, and the difference between multiple groups was compared by analysis of variance.Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between measurement data.Using the three effective dimensions of the EPQ scale as independent variables and the total score of SCL-90 as the dependent variable,a multiple linear regression model was established.P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results:(1)There was a statistically significant difference(P < 0.05)between the epilepsy group and the healthy group in Psychoticism(P)and Extra-introversion(E)scores,P scores: epilepsy group > healthy group,E scores: epilepsy group < healthy group,N scores: epilepsy group > healthy group. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in Neuroticism(N)and Lie(L)scale scores(P >0.05).scores of somatization,obsessive-compulsive,depression,anxiety,hostility,phobia and psychoticism in SCL-90 factors were statistically significant between the epilepsy group and the healthy group(P < 0.05),as shown by scores epilepsy group >control group. The differences in the scores of interpersonal sensitivity and paranoia between the two groups were not statistically significant(P > 0.05).(2)The results of univariate analysis showed that the P,E,and N scores of PWE with different sex, family history, disease duration, seizure type, seizure severity, history of status epilepticus(SE),and taking different ASMs were significantly different(P < 0.05),while the differences in scores of EPQ among patients with different age and education level were not statistically P scores were significantly positively correlated with total SCL-90 scores and somatization, obsessions, phobias, and psychopathology(P < 0.05);E scores were significantly negatively correlated with total SCL-90 scores and somatization, obsessions, depression, phobias, and psychopathology(P < 0.05);N scores were significantly positively correlated with total SCL-90 scores and somatization, phobias, and psychopathology(P < 0.05);L score was positively correlated with somatization(P < 0.05).(3)Regression analysis revealed a significant positive effect of psychoticism(P)on the total SCL-90 score(P < 0.05).Conclusion:(1)Personality changes and decreased mental health levels are seen in adults with PWE compared to healthy populations.(2)Gender,family history, education level, seizure type, history of SE,use of ASMs,duration of disease, seizure frequency,NHS3 scores, and MMSE scores are risk factors for personality changes in PWE.Females, family history of epilepsy, longer disease duration, generalized seizure disorder, history of SE,higher seizure frequency, higher NHS3 scores, lower MMSE scores, and combined use of ASMs were more likely to lead to personality changes in PWE.(3)The mental quality dimension of the Eysenck scales was predictive of mental health level in adult PWE.
