Inner Mongolia is an important ecological security barrier for the motherland, playing an important role in water conservation, desertification prevention, and other aspects. At the same time,Inner Mongolia grasslands are also facing degradation issues.Although China is continuously increasing grassland restoration work, and some areas of Inner Mongolia have restored their grassland ecology to the level of the mid-1980 s,the overall Inner Mongolia grassland ecosystem still faces serious challenges. As an important organizational carrier for grassland animal husbandry management, pastoral professional cooperatives(hereinafter referred to as cooperatives)can help solve the problem of improper use of grasslands by herdsmen. However, currently, cooperatives have not fully utilized their ecological functions. In this context,we study the impact of cooperatives on the protective use of grasslands by herdsmen and explore the mechanism of their impact on their protective use of grasslands,It is of great significance for promoting the sustainable development of grassland animal husbandry and cooperatives.Based on a systematic review of relevant research at home and abroad, this article uses micro effective data from 205 households in Inner Mongolia as the basis, uses entropy method to calculate the level of herders’ protective use of grassland behavior, and uses endogenous transformation model to verify whether cooperatives can affect herders’ protective use of grassland behavior. On this basis,OLS method is used to explore the impact mechanism of cooperatives on herders’ protective use of grassland behavior, and the following conclusions are finally drawn:Through descriptive statistics on the basic characteristics of the sample herdsmen,it was found that there are significant differences in basic characteristics between the herdsmen who joined the cooperative and the herdsmen who did not join the cooperative(hereinafter referred to as member herdsmen and non member herdsmen).Specifically, among the member herdsmen, the proportion of males is higher, the education level is relatively higher, the breeding years are relatively shorter, and the proportion of other social positions is relatively higher The scale of household labor force is relatively larger, the annual income is relatively higher, the grassland area is relatively more, the number of livestock is relatively more, and the ecological awareness is relatively stronger.(2)By using the entropy method to comprehensively calculate the level of protective grassland use behavior of sample herdsmen,it was found that the range of protective grassland use level of sample herdsmen was 0.011 to 0.944,with a mean of 0.461.Among them, the mean level of protective grassland use of member herdsmen was 0.591,which was significantly higher than the protective grassland use behavior value of non member herdsmen of 0.345.(3)Using an endogenous transformation model to verify whether herdsmen joining cooperatives can enhance their protective grassland use behavior. The results showed that the level of protective utilization of grassland among herdsmen who joined the cooperative was significantly higher than that of herdsmen who did not join the cooperative;Herdsman’s personal endowment is a key factor affecting their protective use of grasslands.Herdsman’s personal characteristics such as gender, education level, farming years, personal experience, family characteristics such as family labor force, family income, grassland circulation, ecological cognitive characteristics such as ecological protection cognition, grassland degradation evaluation, and other factors can significantly affect their protective use of grasslands. In addition, government policy support also helps herdsmen to implement protective grassland use behavior; The joining effect of herdsmen indicates that if herdsmen choose not to join the cooperative, their protective utilization behavior of grassland will decrease.(4)Cooperatives mainly influence the protective use of grasslands by herdsmen through their service and regulatory functions. The material supply, skill training, and sales services in the service functions of cooperatives can significantly promote the implementation of protective grassland use behavior by herdsmen, and knowledge training has no significant impact on the protective grassland use behavior of herdsmen; The grazing management, grassland monitoring, and supervision penalties in the regulatory function of cooperatives can all have a positive impact on the protective use of grasslands by herdsmen, and the variable of concentrated grasslands has not passed the significance test.Based on the above conclusions, this study proposes the following countermeasures and suggestions: strengthen publicity to enhance the ecological awareness of herdsmen;Support the development of cooperatives and guide herdsmen to join them;Improve the service functions of cooperatives and improve service levels;Strengthen the standardized construction of cooperatives and strengthen regulatory mechanisms.
