The research on the decoration of Dunhuang caisson patterns and their application in modern design, especially in the fields of dyeing, weaving, and clothing design, has advanced research methods, rich literature content, and increasing research results. However, there is very little research on the decoration of Dunhuang caisson patterns during the Western Xia period and their application in the field of packaging design.During the Western Xia Dynasty,Dunhuang Grottoes,as the largest grottoes in the history, under the influence of Han culture in the Central Plains and Tibetan Buddhism in Tibet, new decorative patterns such as six character mantra and Mandala flowed into Dunhuang Grottoes, making the patterns very multi-ethnic and diversified.Based on the research on the current situation of Dunhuang diatom pits, the exploration content is mainly divided into four parts, focusing on the decorative artistic characteristics and cultural connotations of Dunhuang grotto diatom pits during the Western Xia period,as well as their application in packaging design.By analyzing and studying representative decorative patterns in Dunhuang grottoes during this period, this paper summarizes the changes and characteristics of patterns in Dunhuang grottoes during the Western Xia period from five aspects: shape, composition, arrangement, color, and craftsmanship, and analyzes their cultural connotations. Finally,by redesigning the decorative patterns of the caisson, the traditional decorative patterns of the Dunhuang caisson from the Western Xia period were scattered and reorganized, and applied to packaging design, bringing new vitality to the decorative patterns of the caisson.
