With the exodus of young adults from the countryside to the cities, many of China’s villages are showing a hollowing out.As a result,a series of social problems have emerged, such as the physical and mental health of the elderly, the education and growth of children left behind, and the economic and cultural development of the countryside. The research object of this paper focuses on two relatively vulnerable groups, the elderly and children,in rural areas, and explores the behavior and spiritual demands of the elderly and children in rural public activities from the perspective of environmental psychology. The study site is located in Baotuan Village,Shawo Township,Ezhou City, where most of the residential buildings are built around a pond and many ponds are scattered in the outdoor fields, and most of the residents’ daily activities are carried out around the fields around the ponds and other public sites. The current situation in the countryside is characterized by serious site fragmentation, lack of public facilities, monotony in the daily lives of the old and young groups, and lack of outdoor spaces to gather people. This design practice combines the behavior of the old and young groups and the relationship between the pond and the surrounding environment to create several waterfront public spaces. The design practice uses a micro-intervention approach to plan and renovate several ponds and surrounding public areas in Baotuan Village that have the potential to enhance the landscape space. The first chapter introduces the purpose and significance of the study, and draws up the framework of the study in the light of the current situation of domestic and international research and this design study. The second chapter explores the behavioral psychology of the old and young groups by applying the knowledge of environmental psychology.Chapter 3 presents an in-depth analysis of waterfront space and case studies based on the context of village public space.Chapter4 describes the pre-programming and design strategies.Chapter 5 is the design practice transfer section.Chapter 6 develops the output of the final design content based on the research in the previous chapters. The author hopes that through the design of the pond waterfront public space, the activity behavior of the old and young groups can be developed, and the old and young can carry each other in the behavior activity. The design approach is to create interesting public spaces and public facilities for the elderly and the young to enrich the daily life of the residents and stimulate the vitality of the site. This paper will review the theoretical research basis, examine the design practice research area, analyze and summarize the current environmental problems with domestic and international case studies, and finally seek design strategies to solve the problems and complete the design research.
