The significance of landscape design lies not only in visual effects, but also in providing various spaces for social activities, emphasizing the participation, use, and feeling of the crowd. In the development of existing communities in China, there has been a long-term accumulation of neighborhood interactions, and the elderly and children need diverse communication spaces. However, its construction time is long, and its spatial scale, layout, and facilities are not sufficient to achieve high-frequency,high-quality,and multi type communication. Moreover, many renovations only support some recreational facilities, making it difficult to meet basic communication needs.Currently,it is urgent to study what communication spaces are needed in old residential areas and how to transform them into high-quality communication spaces. As one of the first pilot projects for renovation in Beilin District,Xi’an,XAUAT’s Nanyuan Community faces the contradiction between space and communication, and has completed the renovation and put it into use. Therefore, this paper uses post evaluation as a social survey method to interpret the strategies, models and specific techniques of the transformation design of the communication space in old residential areas.Firstly, based on research on communication psychology, behavior, and spatial needs, investigate the communication activities of residents in Nanyuan, analyze the characteristics and impact mechanisms of communication, and provide guidance for the renovation design of old residential areas in Nanyuan.Secondly, analyze the composition of the communication space in the renovated South Courtyard, laying the groundwork for exploring the changes in residents’ communication activities in the renovated space. The above research provides evaluation objects and indicator references from the perspective of communication demand and post renovation space supply, jointly establishing a complete evaluation indicator content, and laying the foundation for the implementation of post evaluation. Then, through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, the residents’ evaluation of the overall landscape transformation, the transformation of Houle Garden, and the transformation of the square in front of the Museum on the effectiveness of promoting neighborhood exchanges and their demands for supplementary transformation were obtained. Finally, based on the evaluation results and their reasons, corresponding renovation goals and strategies are proposed to respond to and solve the problem of indifference in neighborhood communication in old residential areas.Specific design patterns and applicable design techniques are proposed for the five types of communication spaces in old residential areas.Based on the above research content, the following conclusions are proposed:(1)Based on literature research and activity surveys,it is found that the main group of social interactions in XAUAT’s Nanyuan Community is the elderly and children, and the types of communication activities can be divided into necessary communication, spontaneous communication, and social communication.(2)By evaluating the transformed space,it is proposed that the dynamic relationship is basic condition, hard pavement, sunlight environment, and seating facilities are the key conditions, and other entertainment or service facilities with artistic, cultural, and ecological properties are optimization conditions.(3)Based on the relationship between residents’ communication and space in XAUAT’s Nanyuan Community, five types of communication space in old residential areas are proposed, including central garden type, public building auxiliary type, residential entrance and exit auxiliary type, public building adjacent type, and residential entrance and exit auxiliary type,as well as their renovation design models and techniques.(4)To address the issue of post use evaluation, this article proposes five design strategies for the renovation of communication spaces in old residential areas: placing various types of spaces in the community with a service radius of less than 100 meters;Control the concentrated area to occupy 30-50% of each space;Delineate dynamic and static zones and functional zones according to the "temporal and spatial characteristics of communication";Multiple choices of greening can carry the form of "new concepts and interesting activities";Build a network of seats to ensure that spacing between seats is within the range of 30-50 meters;Build a slow walking trail system that connects all communication spaces as much as possible.
