As China’s first theoretical monograph on garden art,Yuan Ye is not only beautiful in text, but also profound in aesthetic theory and has great research value, which was written by the landscape architect Ji Cheng in the late Ming Dynasty.Chen Zhi,the founder of contemporary Chinese gardening art and a famous garden expert,as one of the most accomplished scholars in the study of Yuan Ye,for the first time annotated Yuan Ye in the vernacular, and realized the modern transformation of the aesthetics of Yuan Ye at the textual level through Notes on Yuan Ye.In addition, the canal cultural landscapes such as Zhenjiang Riverside Park and Boxian Park in Xijin ferry, which Chen Zhi participated in the design and construction, fully demonstrate the creative transformation of the aesthetics of Yuan Ye at the practical level.Starting from the meaning of the name Yuan Ye and the allusions in the book, this study explains the relevant connotation of the aesthetics of Yuan Ye.Then, through the influence of Yuan Ye on Chen Zhi and the creation of Notes on Yuan Ye,this paper explores the creative transformation of Notes on Yuan Ye on the aesthetics of Yuan Ye at the textual level. Finally, with the help of Chen Zhi’s specific gardening case, the creative transformation of the aesthetics of Yuan Ye at the practical level and its influence on the construction of modern public gardens under the background of the canal are analyzed. The study found that Yuan Ye has great connotation in both the title and the text. The title uses the word "Ye" because it better shows that the book is an unprecedented creation. The use of allusions in the text of Yuan Ye also makes the book more readable and contains rich aesthetic connotations.Yuan Ye not only played an important role in China, but it also had a profound impact overseas, and it spread to Japan in the Edo period, and to varying degrees,it had an impact on Japanese gardening, art, literature, and so on.As the first text to annotate Yuan Ye in vernacular, the appearance of Notes on Yuan Ye has once again triggered an upsurge in the study of Yuan Ye at home and abroad.Since then, annotations, interpretations, pictures and texts about Yuan Ye have continued to emerge,so that Yuan Ye has been more widely disseminated. In addition to the textual level, gardening practices such as Zhenjiang Boxian Park, designed and built by Chen Zhi,also reflect the inheritance and development of the aesthetics of Yuan Ye.While inheriting the artistic conception created in the classical Chinese private garden,Boxian Park also shows the characteristics of a public garden that meets the needs of the times. As a monumental garden, the park also continues the analogy of "allusion" in the writing of Yuan Ye with the collective memory of "monumentality",and shows the existential basis of the monumental landscape through "borrowing".Finally, starting from the practice of modern "canal garden" landscape composition, combined with the aesthetics of Yuan Ye,the "borrowing scenery" art of "canal garden" is analyzed, and corresponding suggestions are put forward for garden construction under the background of Grand Canal culture. This modern art practice also formed the cultural tradition of canal gardens, and completed the creative transformation of the aesthetics of Yuan Ye in the interaction between theory and practice.
