Study About Rong Yuan Garden’s Landscape History Of Changsha

Chinese garden has a long history. With the great attainment, Chinese garden plays a very important part in the garden art of the world. However, as the study of Chinese garden has lasted for thousands of years, many documents have been lost and some of the gardens are even unrecorded. The founded-in-1934Rong Yuan garden is a typical representative of the private gardens in Changsha, but there is few study or research to this little-known garden. This article focuses on Rong Yuan garden, which is perfectly preserved till today through the Second Sino-Japanese War, the War of Liberation and the development after the Revolution, with a history of nearly one hundred years. The purpose of studying Rong Yuan garden is to broaden the research area of the Chinese garden, to give an insight into the history of Gardens in Changsha, to discuss the preservation of Rong Yuan garden and its development in the future.The subject takes the researching of Rong Yuan garden as kernel, combined with the study of the history of Rong Yuan garden and writer’s knowledge of profession. To summarize the historical evolution of Rong Yuan garden after document researching and on-site surveying:founded in1934, Rong Yuan garden has been through the Changsha Fire in1938and four battles, from the Nationalist Government to the Liberation, renamed as Rong Yuan garden Hotel in1952till today. To make more people understand the historical status of Rong Yuan garden.2. To speculate the conception of Rong Yuan garden with checking on site and researching on documents:from the foundation to the renaming till today, the concept of Rong Yuan garden shows open mind and beauty of harmony.3. To generally analyze the structure of Rong Yuan garden after the comparison of old&new floor plans. According to the layout, the integral structure formed as symmetry with the central axis. But in order not to be starchy, there were more natural and irregular elements added into the design and arrangement of the spaces on both sides of the axis. For the partial, private garden designs are more used."Garden within garden" and "scenery within scenery" could be seen among the architecture. The flexible arrangement emphasizes the beauty of being natural.4. To summarize the characteristics of Rong Yuan garden according to the historical research:from the classical private garden to the modern garden, Rong Yuan garden gets repaired and improved all the time with the changing environment. The characteristics of a private garden are retained while modern elements are added, to reach an integration of classical and modern.
