| In recent years,the old city of Wuxi is actively undergoing its own transformation and change.The exterior of the building has developed many new ways of presenting itself through technological breakthroughs.The main streets,with their commercial,transport and lifestyle functions,making them the most representative of the city’s architectural landscape.This paper takes the architectural appearance of Wuxi’s old town as the research object,and selects four main streets from the perspective of road level,historical significance and diversity.162 buildings were researched,more than 1,800 photographs were taken in the field,and more than 300 materials were obtained from the Internet and the archives.This paper summarises the research by combining relevant regeneration cases and the policies of Wuxi’s old city over the years.Based on the theories of architectural typology,architectural phenomenology and Gestalt psychology,the three elements of ’form’,’perception’ and’metaphor’ are used to assess the changes in the appearance of the buildings.The first step is to understand the locational and human context in the old town,This is followed by an analysis of the skyline,functional distribution,age and style of the existing street buildings,and a summary of the current architectural appearance at different levels of renewal.This has led to the identification of ’differentiated building colour renewal’,’individualistic building interface renewal’ and ’technically oriented building component renewal’.On the basis of the above characteristics,the problems of the existing renewal model are explored.Finally,strategies for the renewal of the buildings are proposed in two main dimensions.On the one hand,taking the enhancement of the image of Wuxi’s old city as the starting point,three stages of tasks are proposed,namely,"rectifying the old","creating the new" and "promoting the name",and the corresponding hierarchical The optimisation programme is based on a commonality of time.On the other hand,the starting point is to create a spatial perception experience,constructing three scenarios of "perception","culture" and "behaviour" to realise the experience of the street building space.By focusing on the appearance of the street buildings in the old city of Wuxi,this paper compares the current trends in the renewal of street buildings,and re-examines the street architectural spaces that citizens are accustomed to,providing suggestions and references for the future renewal design of the architectural appearance of the old city,as well as providing optimal design strategies for the shaping of the image of the city of Wuxi and the communication of cultural information.It is hoped that the architectural spaces of the streets will perpetuate the memory of the old city,stimulate commercial vitality and enhance the cultural visibility of Wuxi. |
