| The Humble Administrator’s Garden, first built in the Ming Dynasty,is an excellent representative of ancient Chinese gardens, and its landscape forms and landscape architecture are of great value as a reference for modern landscape architecture. In order to explore the landscape architecture of the Humble Administrator’s Garden during its initial construction, this paper selects the Thirty-One Views of the Humble Administrator’s Garden(hereinafter referred to as the Thirty-One Views)as the object of study. The Thirty-One Views was painted by the famous painter Wen Zhengming at the invitation of Wang Xianchen, the owner of the garden,at a time when the Humble Administrator’s Garden had been under construction for over twenty years and the landscape had reached maturity.Through a study of the content of the garden scenes in the Thirty-One Views, the original appearance of the Humble Administrator’s Garden is explored, and its landscape architecture and rich cultural connotations are studied. On the basis of the relationship between Wang Xianchen and Wen Zhengming, the background of the Thirty-One Views, and the features of the Thirty-One Views, this article uses documentary evidence and comparative methods to discuss the objective authenticity of the contents of the Thirty-One Views and to clarify that the contents of the catalogue can be used as an important basis for studying the original landscape form of the Humble Administrator’s Garden, thus laying the foundation for the scientific nature of this article. On this basis, the research is carried out using documentary evidence, fieldwork, comparative methods and comprehensive research.Firstly, the specific locations, forms, surroundings and spatial connections with neighbouring landscapes as depicted in the Thirty-One Views Map are compared and inferred to restore the basic scale and the overall landscape appearance and characteristics of the initial period of construction.Secondly, the elements of the landscape are categorised against the contents of the Thirty-One Views, based on layout, type, form, activity and intention. Finally,on the basis of the spatial treatment of the Thirty-One Scenes, the landscape context of the Thirty-One Scenes is combined with the meaning of the poem inscribed in the Thirty-One Scenes, and the philosophy of the garden as reflected in it is refined and summarised, summarising the natural beauty, the extraordinary overall appearance, the flexible and varied landscaping techniques and the orderly sequence of the landscape of Wang’s Humble Administrator’s Garden. The exhibition is a good opportunity to learn more about the art and thought of Wen Zhengming and Wang Xianchen. |
