Analysis Of The Narrative Space In Humble Administrator’s Garden

The Chinese Classical Gardens,represented by the Suzhou Region in the South of the Yangtze River,differ from other architectural types in that their designers are ancient Chinese literati classes.The purpose of these literati’s famous gardens is to isolate themselves from social life,to stay away from the world,and to enjoy nature as much as possible.They express their personal feelings and philosophies through the garden space,so that we can understand them by the buildings,tresses,bricks and so on in their gardens.This paper combines two methods of Narratology and Spatial Configuration to study the Classical Gardens’ narrative and space.In order to make the research credible,we only choose to study one typical case in Suzhou garden——the Humble Administrator’s Garden.Narratology studies the emotions and philosophies that the owner of the garden conveys through the garden at the narrative level.Spatial Configuration studies how the garden’s owner organizes the spatial structure and experience at the space level.The two complement each other and form the narrative space system of the Humble Administrator’s Garden.To be specific,the article is divided into six chapters: The first chapter introduces the background,current situation,significance,objects,methods and contents of the research.The second chapter briefly discusses the theoretical basis of the narrative text and architectural space used in the analysis of this article.This chapter mainly includes the three aspects of architecture and narrative,narrative structure and plot,space syntax.The third chapter analyzes the narrative space from the space system and the narrative system of the Humble Administrator’s Garden.Through the analysis and summary of the spatial and narrative structure and connection of the material space level and the narrative text level of the Humble Administrator’s Garden,The spatial structure of the “Garden in the Garden” of the Humble Administrator’s Garden supports the narrative structure of the “Story in the Story”.The two are mutually conditional and mutually coordinated,and through the spatial connection system andthe arrangement of the Narrative Festival,they finally constitute the government.The narrative space system of the park.The fourth chapter combines the method of horizon analysis in space syntax to analyze the plot space in the four sub-parks in the park to demonstrate that the narrative system of the Humble Administrator’s Garden is combined with its spatial organization,and finally forms its "residence".Narrative space system.The fifth chapter selects four representative garden routes through the reading of the literature materials,and uses this as an entry point to analyze and compare the influence of different scenic spots selection and tour sequence on the narrative experience of the garden.The conclusion of the sixth chapter summarizes the process and significance of the research,and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of using the combination of spatial syntax and narratology to study the narrative space of classical gardens.
