Traditional villages occupy a pivotal position in China’s history and culture, carrying rich historical values and cultural connotations.Their spatial forms are important carriers of farming culture and rural construction ideas, and can fully express the regional characteristics and culture of traditional villages. However, with the rapid development of society, the spatial forms of traditional villages have been destroyed under the impact of urbanisation, and their historical and humanistic connotations have been eroded, resulting in the depletion of material spatial forms and other problems.In-depth knowledge of the spatial characteristics of traditional villages and the exploration of suitable development paths for villages under the influence of complex topography are the keys to better inherit the historical heritage. At present, research on the spatial form of traditional villages in China has undergone a series of changes, shifting from the qualitative description stage to the quantitative research stage, and gradually starting a research pathway in which multiple methods corroborate each other.By applying fractal theory to quantitative analysis,we can gain a deeper understanding of the characteristics of the spatial form of traditional villages, which is of great significance in guiding the work of historical landscape conservation.Through this research method,we can better reveal the uniqueness of the spatial form of traditional villages and provide powerful support for the preservation and transmission of historical culture.Firstly, based on fractal theory, this paper studies the fractal characteristics of topography and geomorphology in the Mianyang hilly area through grid dimension, and the results show that the Mianyang hilly area is a typical fractal landform, and the fractal landform has the greatest restriction on the spatial distribution and spatial morphological development of traditional villages, and the spatial morphology of traditional villages can be more effectively studied by using fractal theory.Secondly,by comparing the aspect ratio and shape index values of 38 traditional villages in the hilly areas of Mianyang, and taking into account the actual situation of Mianyang, the spatial forms of traditional villages in Mianyang are finally classified into six types of spatial forms,namely,doughnut-shaped mesh-vein type,doughnut-shaped scattered dot type, banded side-vein type, banded scattered dot type,finger-shaped forked vein type and finger-shaped feathered vein type, and the boundary dimension, radius dimension and grid number are applied to the boundary forms of 38 traditional villages and the construction The spatial patterns of traditional villages in Mianyang are more suitable for their development, and the influencing factors are analysed to reveal the fractal pattern of different spatial patterns and summarise the morphological characteristics of traditional villages in Mianyang.Afterwards, the three types of typical villages are selected, and the boundary dimension grid dimension is used to measure the boundary form, public space form and road network form of the three typical villages, and to analyse the spatial texture of the three typical traditional villages from the perspective of "fractal order",and then to summarise the fractal order of the public space form of the villages. Finally, the paper explores the spatial conservation strategies of traditional villages in the context of fractal thinking and theory. This paper establishes the link between fractal theory and village conservation planning through the study of the fractal characteristics of village spatial forms, and provides further exploration and evidence for the planning of village spatial forms.
