Foreign-related Hotel Construction In The Early Stage Of Reform And Opening UP

As a way of building hotels during a specific period in China,these foreign-related hotels built from 1970 s to 1980 s represented the highest standards for building hotels at that time.Benefited from their unique policy privileges and construction conditions,they led in introducing new ideas,new materials and new technologies from abroad.Based on reviewing the "construction boom" and "discussion boom" of hotels during this period,this paper focuses on the case of Nanjing Jinling hotel,investigates its construction background,design and construction process,and typical interior space,from one section to reveal complexity and contradiction of the foreign-related hotel construction in the early stage of reform and opening up,and then explore its architectural significance and historical value.Firstly,it reviews the hotel-construction boom in the early stage of reform and opening up,and establishes the basis for historical research.By reorganizing the discussion about hotel-construction boom in architectural discourse of this period,this paper focuses on how hotel construction was viewed in professional journals of architecture(such as Architectural Journal,The Architect,Time Architecture)from 1978 to 1990.Further on,it extends to the journal Architectural Technology(Jianzhu Jishu)in the field of architectural science.It was observed that the discussion on Jinling Hotel,an important model for introducing foreign high-rise building construction technology,about its architectural significance is still insufficient at present.It then expounds the reason for taking Jinling Hotel as a typical case of foreign-related hotel construction.This paper then focuses on the discussion on the specific case of Jinling hotel,starting from the construction nature of the first batch of hotels approved by the State Council to use overseas Chinese and foreign capital to build hotels serving for foreigners.It briefly reviews its construction process,discusses its complexity and contradiction in terms of affiliation,site selection,funding sources,design power,and many other social backgrounds and physical environments.By entering into a specific historical context concretely and slightly,it discusses how the mechanism level contributed to the generation of this building.On this basis,the whole process of design and construction of Jinling Hotel is further discussed,from architectural design,structure selection,import of high-rise construction equipment,service facilities and supporting equipment,indoor and outdoor environment design and many other aspects.It explores how a modern super high-rise foreign-related hotel landed in Nanjing,and how the Jinling Hotel was shaped as a symbol of a modern building at that time.Through the above aspects,combined with the typical space inside the hotel(the three types are revolving restaurant,guest room and shopping center),this paper discusses how the modern hotel,a new building type,was technically recognized in China in the early stage of reform and opening up,and how the new types of urban space constructed a picture of modern life for Nanjing citizens.Finally,with the help of the case study of Nanjing Jinling Hotel,this paper summarizes and discusses the characteristics of "foreign-related hotel" and related architectural issues in the early stage of reform and opening up.
