In the 1950 s and 1960 s,a group of post-war architects including John Hejduk began to reflect on modernist architecture, and explored the essence and poetic connotation of architecture in their own way.The content of Hejduk’s architectural works can be roughly divided into two parts, namely realistic buildings and conceptual buildings(complex of buildings). Most of the realistic buildings are designed for residential buildings, and the research time is concentrated from 1954 to 1970;the conceptual buildings(complex of buildings)are the Masque series works, and the research time is concentrated from 1980 to 2000.The realistic architectural research period can be subdivided into three periods, namely, the period of Texas House(1954-1962),the period of Diamond Projects(1962-1968)and the period of Wall Houses(1964-1970).During the the period of Texas Houses,Hejduk ambiguously demonstrated the geometric architectural poetry through completely precise component alignment and strict block logic to form a precise form. This period can be described as an architectural poetic undercurrent.During the period of Diamond projects,Hejduk conveys the lyrical poetry of architectural life through the transparency of architectural phenomena and the manipulation of spatial movement and temporal forms. This period can be described as an architectural poetic accident.During the period of the Wall Houses,Hejduk’s manipulation of spatial forms makes the architectural space completely opaque, suggesting multiple layers of meaning behind the surface space, which in turn triggers various imaginations and creates a disturbing atmosphere.Space thus becomes more meaningful and leads to the poetic essence of architecture. This period can be described as a period of poetic surges in architecture.During the period of conceptual buildings(complex of buildings),Hejduk has already gone beyond formalism to the direct visualization of meaning and ideas.Conceptual buildings(complex of buildings)covers Hejduk’s thoughts on architecture, people, social history and the future, and metaphysically embodies the essential poetic meaning of architecture. This period can be considered the pinnacle of architectural poetry. As one of the unique architects with great contributions in the history of architecture,Hejduk has left many works and ideas to the world. In this paper, through the comparative analysis of texts, drawings, and models of the representative works of the above four periods one by one, combined with multidisciplinary research methods,it systematically summarizes the generation of architectural form logic and architectural poetry, and finally summarizes Hejduk’s significance and inspiration in the field of architecture and architectural theory.
