Designed and built between 1939 and 1940,the Casa Giuliani-Frigerio were the last completed work of the famous Italian architect Giuseppe Terragni during the interwar period. As a representative of Italian Rationalism,Terragni created a series of high quality buildings during his short career, which contributed to the development of Italian modern architecture and became a classic work for future generations to study.Compared to these public buildings, the Casa Giuliani-Frigerio is not the most well-known of Terragni’s buildings, but it is undoubtedly one of his most studied works, representing a synthesis of most of Terragni’s architectural concepts.Using this apartment as a sample,Peter Eisenman critically analyzes the entire architectural design process by incorporating a linguistic approach, discovering the building’s innovative decomposition of concepts and formal intentions, and illuminating important formal clues for the study of Terragni’s work. The Casa Giuliani-Frigerio thus exhibits an independent and original contribution to the language of modern architecture, and becomes an important basis for interpreting Terragni’s design ideas. However, after Eisenman’s interpretation, academic research on the building began to focus generally on a purely formal analysis detached from its context and environment, which to some extent caused the separation of Casa Giuliani-Frigerio from Terragni’s design thought. Therefore, this article attempts to investigate the design thought of Casa Giuliani-Frigerio,and on the basis of the analysis of the apartment itself, clarify the design thought embodied in the apartment in the context of the times and other architectural creations of Terragni, and interpret the significance of the building in multiple contexts. The article is divided into four main parts:The first part is an interpretation of Terragni’s architectural career and design ideas from1926 to 1939,which is a chronological division of Terragni’s career into three parts, taking into account the context of the times, and summarizing and outlining the development of Terragni’s design ideas before the Casa Giuliani-Frigerio.The second part is an analysis of the design process of Casa Giuliani-Frigerio,tracing the four changes in the architectural design process, searching for the reasons for the changes in each draft, and summarizing the deeper concepts embodied in Casa Giuliani-Frigerio.The third part is a reflection on the Casa Giuliani-Frigerio,analyzing the design ideas embodied in the apartments in the context of Terragni’s previous architectural creations, and interpreting the impact of the war after the completion of the apartments and Terragni’s last cathedral draft, concluding that the Casa Giuliani-Frigerio is a "hasty curtain call" for Terragni’s career and an "unfinished prologue" for the future. The "unfinished chapter" of Terragni’s career. The fourth section reflects on the multiple meanings of the Casa Giuliani-Frigerio,both for Terragni himself and for the development of modern architecture.Through the elaboration and analysis of the above four parts,a complete interpretation of the design thinking of Casa Giuliani-Frigerio is formed. It is hoped that a clear way of thinking and a systematic concept can be drawn from it,which can produce some inspiration for the current architectural creation.
