Based on the Church of All-Merciful Savior’s examination, this thesis seeks to build up a Scan-to-Replicate framework to apply novel digital technologies to the potential preservation of wooden heritage buildings. One of the critical tasks is to find a set of practical algorithms to fulfill data exchange among related software platforms, such as 3D scanning,Building Information Modelling(BIM),and robotics control.First, with the help of 3D scanning technology,a database of the Church is established. The author conducted on-site surveying of the Church by Terrestrial Laser Scanning(TLS)and acquired a 3D points model(sparse model). The point cloud model is then optimized to the BRep model by parametric software and is integrated into the BIM database cataloged with different families. The resulting model becomes a full database of the building’s components and elements, such as walls, roofs, doors, and windows. Finally, taking a baluster—one of the complex elements—as an example, the thesis demonstrates the process of programming the code(GCode)which drives the robotics to mill it,as well as its replication(in the scale of 1:2),which is made from stock wood in the laboratory in case of replacement. The results show that,in preserving wooden heritage buildings, the BIM can be generated as a database interoperated with other digital technologies, and the robotics can be applied to rapid elementmanufacturing as necessary.
