| Since the opening of Chongqing in the late Qing Dynasty, the influx of Western ideas and technologies has forced this once self-sufficient and relatively closed city into world relations. The flourishing of commerce and trade and the rise of transportation construction drove the reconfiguration of inter-regional,inter-city,and region-city relations, and this had a tremendous impact on the spatial structure of the main city of Chongqing. With the outbreak of the War of Resistance, the National Government moved westward.Driven by external forces, the urban landscape and functional distribution of Chongqing’s old city and new district were once again transformed. From the opening of the port, the demolition of the city, the expansion of the new district, the establishment of the city as an accompanying capital, and the return of the capital to Nanjing, the urban center of gravity in modern Chongqing has been in a dynamic state of change for more than 50 years, and this has set the current spatial pattern of the city. This paper uses historical maps and literature to analyze the regional relations, urban spatial structure, and urban imagery of Chongqing in the modern era,and to explore the causes, characteristics, and mechanisms of urban center of gravity migration. The first chapter is an introduction. The second chapter interprets the analysis elements of urban morphology and cartography, and describes the principles, difficulties, and specific steps of the historical map translation method, and builds an analytical framework of urban center of gravity migration on the basis of the three.Chapter 3presents the impact of regional changes and divergences in goods, transportation, and functional structures on the migration of the city’s center of gravity, while Chapter 4focuses on the internal transformation of the city, explaining the historical process of the migration of the city’s center of gravity from the old city to the new city in terms of land use and population, street structure, and functional structure. The fifth chapter interprets the migration, divergence, distribution, and frequency of the imagery elements as a complement to the third and fourth chapters. The final chapter analyzes the migration of the city’s center of gravity as described in the previous section, summarizes its characteristics and the mechanisms behind it,and proposes suggestions for solving the current urban development dilemma.Based on the above discussion, the migration of the center of gravity of the main city of Chongqing in modern times, influenced by external stimuli and internal changes,is a spatial expression of the city’s response to increased external mobility. In the whole process, the conflict between people and land, transportation construction, and backward technology and concept played the roles of helper and resistance respectively.Behind the migration of the center of gravity is the role and reaction between objects and images. |
