The Old Town, which marks a city’s era and historical changes, plays a pivotal role in its economic and social development. In the context of China’s current promotion of the development of urban land resources in stock, the regeneration of old cities is an important way to enhance the quality and connotation of cities. However, due to the constraints of urban development needs and the cost of large-scale regeneration, especially in the process of regeneration, old cities usually suffer from problems such as the deterioration of neighbourhoods, lack of vitality, ecological and habitat degradation, and the absence of social networks, which are extremely detrimental to the current situation of old cities seeking to develop with distinctive dynamics to achieve sustainable development. The aim of this dissertation is to explore a sustainable regeneration path for the old city in a new perspective, breaking the shackles of "regeneration in terms of physical space".In contrast to traditional thinking about urban regeneration, this dissertation uses Bourdieu’s theory of social practices in relation to networks as a lens to explore the city, treating the old city as an independent field and using the open-ended concepts of ’habitus’,’field’ and ’capital’ as the basis for the study of the ’field of people’,’field of things’ and ’field of money’ in the regeneration of the old urban area.Based on a literature review and field research, the dissertation constructs an evaluation system, dissects trends, summarises problems and influencing factors, and then proposes strategies.Firstly, the DPSIR model framework was used as an evaluation tool to establish an evaluation system for the sustainable regeneration of old urban areas and to conduct a deep quantitative analysis of the regeneration progress of Huangpu District.Secondly, through the correspondence between actors and field structures(the "three fields")and evaluation factors, the problems of the "human field","material field" and "money field" in the regeneration process of Huangpu District were analysed, and based on this, the main factors affecting the development of the "three fields" were identified as:(1)Uneven development of the human field due to the existing structure of social networks that constrain the healthy development of urban areas and the weakness of vertical social transmission ties.(2)The strong conflict between the old and new spatial order and the fragmentation of internal spatial connections lead to the development pressure of the physical field.(3)The mismatch between the existing spatial structure and industrial development and the misalignment of economic and cultural capital lead to the overdevelopment of the money field. Finally, based on the above-mentioned influencing factors,we propose a corresponding regeneration strategy based on the optimisation requirements of the ’three fields’ in Huangpu District.By adjusting and rebuilding the spatial order, consolidating the loose social network and creating opportunities for capital appreciation,a systematic and effective solution is proposed for the regeneration of Huangpu District to achieve multidimensional and sustainable regeneration. |
