Research On Urban Waterfront Landscape Design From The Perspective Of Regional Cultur

The city with a riverside area is a significant place that connects people to both city and nature sensations;it is a place that reflects growth and prosperity of that city.More importantly,it is a great place to represents the local culture to anyone visiting.According to many famous cities in the world,a waterfront area had often been a source of urban development as it could be a nice gathering place for both cultural and commercial activities.As globalization expands quickly,the waterfronts in some cities needed to be modernized and internationalized to welcome foreign visitors.However,it is important to keep specific cultural identity in the area and not completely erase the color of the city while changing some aspects so it can provide conveniences to visitors.Laos is rich with natural resources and Vang Vieng is one of the cities in Laos that surrounded by high mountains,river flows and all-year-round evergreen trees.Therefore,Vang Vieng’s waterfront landscape has been redesigned to preserve the natural landscape alongside the river as now the Nam Song River is under threat from human and climate change-induced disasters.The design is determined to keep the local culture of Vang Vieng so that its beautiful culture is preserved for the future generations.Moreover,it is a way to spread the culture,create value and inherit local history to the world.The research has demonstrated three aspects of Vang Vieng culture: Vang Vieng spiritual culture,its diverse ethnicity,and Vang Vieng ecotourism culture.This paper summarizes and explains the concept of cultural landscape to illustrate the city’s priority and purpose,as well as the process of studying urban landscape design from the perspective of regional culture according to the the studies from China and abroad.This research complies of many methods based from previous documents of studies such as literature research,case study,field analysis,and other reliable sources.This research paper targeting to suggest directions for introducing regional culture into urban waterfront landscape,i.e.,an improvement by comparing knowledge,creating ideas for the research process and new findings from both technical and educational approaches related to the current issue such as topographical change,climate change and development impact.The conclusion of this paper will summarize the waterfront landscape design guidelines and introduce the Vang Vieng’s landscape design guidelines that is appropriate to the city by emphasizing with the cultural and the environmental aspects of Vang Vieng.
