| As a mental model, universal space emerged with modernism, generally referring to a non-directional,undifferentiated general space, which echoes the production mode of mass manufacturing and has an impact on architectural design around the world. As the spatial paradigm of the 20 th century, universal space has influenced many architects.Throughout the design works of Sri Lankan architect Jeffrey Bawa,we can find that he is deeply influenced by the prototype of ’universal space’,but also has in-depth thinking and creative application combining place, history and reality. This thesis explores the development context and principles of ’universal space’,explores the application methods of ’universal space’ by modernism architects, and explores Geoffrey Bawa’s application strategy, and development process of the basic prototype of ’universal space’.The author explores Bawa’s in-depth understanding and application strategies of universal space, and the influence of its internal non-universal elements on space through three aspects: the overall layout, structural treatment and spatial expression of Geoffrey Bawa’s architecture. In the overall layout,Bawa uses grid control and axis placement to control the overall layout logic. The basic prototype of ’universal space’ was used to form a variety of space types to create various levels of overlapping space in the use of structure, and carefully handles the inner and outer boundaries of the space, and then through some "non-partitioning methods" form a division of the universal space so that the room can form a space state of layer by layer penetration. In the spatial expression,Bawa created different levels and atmospheres of use through various furniture and other spatial elements, combined with the architectural design, and brought subtle physical feelings.Editing universal spaces with "non-universal" elements becomes the spatial organization in Bawa’s architecture. This paper explores new ways of using universal space by interpreting Bawa’s architectural works through the use of literature research, case studies, model restoration and generalization.Study the spatial characteristics of Bawa architectural design and the design language in architectural works, and provide ideas and methods for the research and practice of Bawa and universal space in China. |
