The development of contemporary urban theory has undergone several intertwined processes of development, including modernism, postmodernism and new urbanism. In the context of globalisation, the recognisability and liveability of the city itself has become an important basis for urban research and urban construction. In terms of technical tools, the rise of urban design in the 1960 s was a profound rethink of urban planning that was purely efficiency and function-driven,and the creation of a threedimensional system of urban public space with a greater sense of belonging and identity was a major working basis for contemporary urban design. The spatial form of the historic centres of Italian mountain cities has undergone a long and continuous development, the result of a long accumulation of human ideals and experiences in the construction and use of urban public space, and has universal value for the shaping of urban public space around the world today. Many of the characteristic urban public spaces of Italian mountain cities have long been the focus of many theoretical studies and analyses of urban design, but they are mostly analysed in isolated cases, without being linked to the overall development of urban morphology and public space systems. This thesis seeks to provide an in-depth analysis of the spatial forms of ten typical Italian mountain cities through the use of urban morphology, typology and other research methods based on the three-dimensional spatial forms of cities,in order to provide an explanatory experience on the mechanism and method of spatial composition for the study of mountain urban design in China. The text is divided into three parts. The first part includes Chapters one and two, which define the object and scope of the study through an understanding of the value of the historic centre of Italian mountain cities, draw on the current status and methods of domestic and international research to determine the research methodology of this paper, and clarify the scope of the research cases selected through an overview of the geographical, historical and urban formation context of Italy. The second part includes chapters three and four, which analyse the structural system and elemental characteristics of urban public space respectively. In terms of the structural system of public space, four types of mountain cities are classified according to topographical features, and the correlation between the spatial order and town fabric and the natural topography is elaborated;in terms of the relationship between the elements and combinations of public space, the functions, forms, scales, proportions, enclosure features, height difference treatment and the characteristics of the interrelationships between streets and squares are analysed. While understanding the morphological characteristics of public space in mountainous areas,it lays the material foundation for the ensuing analysis of morphological evolution and meaning. The third part consists of chapters five, six and seven, through the analysis of the case cities, the evolution process of city spatial forms and the mechanism of action of relevant influencing factors are elaborated, the meaning of space is dissected from a development perspective, the meaning and characteristics of the evolution process of spatial forms are again recalled, and then the close integration of collective activities, community structure and spatial characteristics plays an important role in the transmission of cultural heritage is elucidated, and finally a summary The paper concludes with the conclusions of the study. |
