Southwest of China covers an area of over 250 square kilometers, accounting for about 26% of the country land, including Chongqing, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Tibet, with 55 administrative city, 511 county-level administrative units. This area also give birth to the oldest mountain cities, with largest number of them and the most various spatial type. The mountains has a deep influence on the cities’ production and living. With the increasingly tense in cities’ construction, the development of the mountain resources seems more and more important. Since The Great Western Development strategy began, the mountain cities phenomenon gradually increased. In recent years, as the national new urbanization progresses quickly, the urbanization in mountain cities has gathered momentum suddenly. However, the lack of understanding of the particularity of mountain areas leads to the crowded space, deterioration of ecological environment in the process of construction of mountain cities. The spatial pattern is the combination of economy, society, policy and culture. The geographical features of the mountain determines the uniqueness and complexity of these cities. Through the research on mountain city space form can well reveal the relation between external city construction(characterization) and inner city development(nature). Given to those factors, the tutor has outline the framework of a national research on mountain cities which are divided into two parts: before 19 th century and after that according to time, and six regional parts according to the geography, hoping to set up a database for all the mountain cities, as well as expanding the breadth and depth of the mountain city.Based on this background, this paper takes the southwest part of the whole study, taking the time as a clue, from the three stages of ancient times, modern times, modern times, with nearly 30 representatives of different types and development background of cities as a case study, with the methods of morphology, the new history, comparative law research, aiming to explore the evolution of city space form of the historical evolution, analysis its influence factors, summarizes the morphological characteristics and evolution of the dynamic mechanism, to explore the relationship between the mountain city space form and social, economic, and cultural development, and the modern mountain city construction difficulties and enlightenment. The thesis includes seven chapters: the first chapter is the introduction, mainly elaborated the research background and the framework of this thesis, research scope, research at home and abroad, and the significance of the research, methods. The second chapter, an overview of the development of the southwest region, briefly describes the features, natural geography in southwest mountain city and historical cultural and economy characteristics. The third, the fourth and the fifth chapters, discuss the characteristics of space form in ancient times, modern times and modern times in southwest. And their structure are basically the same: 1) an introduction of the background of mountain city development in different periods; 2) according to the different period of typical mountain city case, show the evolution of city spatial form 3); analyze the impacts on the evolution of space form of mountainous city from the political, economic, cultural, social and other point of view; 4) summarizes the types of city spatial characteristics and dynamic mechanism. The sixth chapter summarizes the morphological characteristics of the southwest mountain city space expansion mode, characteristics and the Enlightenment of induction mechanism, according to each period of mountain city space form evolution. The seventh chapter conclusion, innovation and deficiency of this paper with objective evaluation.
