Since the reform and opening up,Chinese society has developed rapidly and achieved many remarkable achievements; At the same time,it also brings enormous ecological and environmental pressure. If more targeted measures are not taken,it will seriously constrain the comprehensive development of China’s economy, society, and people. Therefore, the issue of ecological cost has become a focal issue that cannot be ignored and urgently needs to be solved in the current development of Chinese society. This article follows historical materialism as the basic principle, comprehensively analyzes the impact of inevitable ecological costs and artificial ecological costs on social development, and proposes a path of low ecological cost development that is in line with contemporary Chinese social development. The paper is divided into five parts:Chapter 1,Introduction.Elaborated on the research significance of ecological costs and the current research status of the topic at home and abroad.Chapter 2,Theoretical Research.Starting from the text, define the connotation, characteristics, and main classifications of ecological costs. This serves as the theoretical basis for this article’s research, further elaborating on the main categories of inevitable ecological costs and anthropogenic ecological costs, revealing the coexistence of necessary ecological costs and social development,as well as the phenomenon that anthropogenic ecological costs inevitably hinder social development. Therefore,it is necessary to use existing means in social development to minimize the necessary ecological costs and resolve anthropogenic ecological costs.Chapter 3,Realistic Thinking. In the reality of China’s social development, there are practical problems such as environmental degradation, resource scarcity, and intensification of social contradictions. The main reason for this is due to insufficient understanding of anthropogenic ecological costs in theory and insufficient efforts to overcome them in practice. If human ecological costs are not constrained and overcome,it will bring many negative impacts to future social development, seriously restricting people’s pursuit of a better life.Only by minimizing the probability of human induced ecological costs can we ensure harmony and stability between humans and nature, between humans and society, and between humans in the development of Chinese society.Chapter 4,Proposal of Countermeasures. This includes two aspects: enhancing cognition and exploring practice.Specific countermeasures have been proposed based on the root causes of the frequent occurrence of anthropogenic ecological cost issues. In terms of theoretical improvement,by creating an atmosphere, guiding concepts, transforming thinking, and firmly developing ideas,we aim to enhance the theoretical understanding of ecological costs among the public, cultivate ecological rational consumption habits, and explore a low ecological cost development concept that is suitable for China’s social development situation. In terms of practical exploration, constructing an ecological cost evaluation system for urban development, following the principles and methods of ecological cost regulation, while ensuring that all people enjoy natural scenery, highlights the fairness and justice of the ecological environment.Chapter 5,Conclusion.In the process of social development, only by minimizing the inevitable ecological cost and resolving the artificial ecological cost as much as possible can we exchange for greater social development at a lower cost and achieve permanent promotion of the development and progress of contemporary Chinese society.
