With the continuous development of social sciences and the rapid advancement of social material civilization,on the one hand, human beings enjoy the extravagant life brought by this scientific development,on the other hand, the deepening ecological environment problems are also threatening human society.Especially in the last 50 years of the 20 th century, the global environment was unprecedentedly polluted, the ecosystem was severely damaged, and global environmental problems such as “greenhouse effect” and atmospheric ozone depletion were successively threatened, which seriously threatened the survival and development of human beings. In the middle of the 20 th century, with the intensification of the globalization of capitalism and the rise of neoliberalism, the issue of ecological environment was put on the agenda, and ecological Marxism came into being.James O'Connor is an important representative of American contemporary ecological Marxism.Natural Causes is an important masterpiece in the field of ecological Marxism.By analyzing the intrinsic relationship between Marxism and ecology,O'Connor pointed out that although traditional Marxism recognizes the anti-ecological nature of capitalism,it also has a certain theoretical empty field and lacks rich ecological sensibility. Thus,O'Connor reconstructed historical materialism by introducing the dimensions of "culture" and "nature" into historical materialism, and formed his own ecological Marxist thought. On this basis, through the critique of capitalist society, the introduction of his own ecological Marxist thought into the field of ecological political philosophy, pointing out that the continuous expansion of the inherent nature of capitalism will inevitably lead to ecological crisis and economic crisis, and is not sustainable.Capitalism is also unable to solve the ecological crisis and the economic crisis. He then advocates combining ecology with socialism and proposing his own alternative program—ecological socialism. At the same time,China is also facing the problem of ecological environment.China is currently at an important stage in building a socialist ecological civilization. The contradiction between economic development and environmental protection has become increasingly prominent, and the ecological environment has become increasingly serious. With the development of the economy and the improvement of people's material living standards, the state and the people are paying more and more attention to ecological environmental protection and increasingly pursuing a green ecological environment and living environment. The idea of James O'Connor as a product of the development of the times has certain enlightenment significance for the construction of ecological civilization in China. This thesis attempts to systematically sort out James O'Connor's ecological thoughts, discuss his main ideas in general, and dialectically comment on O'Connor's ecological thoughts. And exploring the ways and means suitable for the construction of socialist ecological civilization in China, and providing certain reference value for the construction of ecological civilization in China. The first chapter of this thesis mainly expounds the social background and theoretical source of O'Connor's ecological thought, and understands the reality and theoretical basis of its thoughts. The second chapter mainly combs the inner logic of O'Connor's thought, and discusses the main ideas from three parts. The third chapter is a dialectical review of O'Connor's ecological thought, analyzing the theoretical value and limitations of his thoughts;the fourth chapter is the elaboration of the practical practical significance of O'Connor's ecological thought.
