Since the reform and opening up,the quality of life of Chinese residents has significantly improved, and the demand for healthcare has also continued to grow, stimulating the rapid development of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. However, the development of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry is accompanied by increasingly fierce competition and environmental degradation. How to achieve sustainable development of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry and improve environmental quality is currently an important issue that we need to face.At present,a series of laws have been introduced by the country to encourage innovation and development in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.Environmental regulation is the prevention, control, and management of environmental pollution issues, and various means and policies implemented for the purpose of environmental protection. With the increasing attention paid by the country to environmental protection issues and the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, the role and impact mechanism of environmental regulation on industrial competitiveness have become a key direction of thinking. However, due to the inter national There are differences between regions and industries,so scholars have not yet reached a consensus on whether environmental regulations play a promoting or inhibitory role.Based on the above,in order to pursue the coordinated development of the environment and economy, this article focuses on the impact mechanism between environmental regulations and the competitiveness of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, aiming to find methods to enhance the competitiveness of China’s pharmaceutical manufacturing industry and improve environmental quality. This article adopts a combination of literature analysis and empirical analysis.Firstly,it reviews the relevant theories and literature on industrial competitiveness, environmental regulations, and the relationship between the two;Secondly,an analysis was conducted on the current situation of environmental regulation and pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in China, identifying the existing problems.Relevant variables were used to measure the intensity of environmental regulation and the competitiveness of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry; Then, based on theoretical and literature review, the theoretical impact mechanism between the two was analyzed; Finally, from the perspective of empirical analysis, the direct and indirect pathways through which environmental regulations affect the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry were studied. The indirect impact mechanism is to consider the impact of environmental regulations on the competitiveness of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry under the mediation of technological innovation and foreign investment. At the same time,a spatial error model was constructed for empirical analysis, and feasible suggestions were proposed. The empirical results indicate that China’s pharmaceutical manufacturing industry is developing amidst twists and turns, with a low overall growth rate. However, the overall scale is expanding, and the development potential is enormous. The intensity of environmental regulation in China varies among different regions, with higher intensity in the eastern region;Environmental regulation will bring about environmental subsidies, tax reduction, industrial structure adjustment and optimization, and promote the competitiveness of China’s pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. At the same time, environmental regulation will use the mesomeric effect of technological innovation to promote competitiveness;Environmental regulations have a spatial effect on the competitiveness of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.Considering spatial correlation, the promoting effect has increased, and there is heterogeneity in the spatial effect.Increasing environmental regulations in the eastern and central regions is beneficial for enhancing competitiveness, while it has no significant impact on the western regions. This article focuses on the impact mechanism of environmental regulations on the competitiveness of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, providing a theoretical basis for the green and sustainable development and quantitative evaluation of the national pharmaceutical manufacturing industry,as well as the formulation of environmental regulation tools and policies, alleviating the enormous pressure brought by the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry to the environment. On the other hand,it helps to provide targeted and specific suggestions for the development of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, and enhance the competitiveness of China’s pharmaceutical manufacturing industry,To achieve green development of the economy and society.
