There is a synergistic and feedback relationship between the growth of scale economy and environmental pollution in China,and increasing the investment in R&D of environmental protection technology is the most effective catalyst for the synergistic relationship.With the popularization of geographic information system and other technologies,the research on environmental and economic problems from the perspective of space is becoming more and more in-depth.As an important approach to the growth of scale economy in China,industrial agglomeration has become a mainstay of industrial distribution mode due to its characteristics of focusing on spatial distribution,geographical clustering,high synergy and high efficiency.Therefore,how to discuss the impact of industrial agglomeration on environmental pollution from the perspective of time and space and how to introduce R&D investment into the analysis to investigate its role is of great significance to the road of green and sustainable development in China.This paper firstly analyzes the influence mechanism of industrial agglomeration and R&D investment on environmental pollution in theory,and then discusses the influence of their correlation on environmental pollution in mechanism.In terms of industrial agglomeration,this paper combines Marshall’s external economic theory and Weber’s location economic theory to qualitatively analyze the impact of industrial agglomeration on environmental pollution from two aspects of positive and negative effects respectively.The results show that the positive effect of industrial agglomeration on environmental pollution is mainly reflected in the sharing of intermediate inputs,sharing of labor and sharing of public facilities,while the negative effect is mainly reflected in the two aspects of labor intensity and production plant intensity.For the research and development investment,the paper starts from the enterprise level and the industry level respectively,and finds that the research and development investment has a negative effect on the environmental pollution.For industrial agglomeration and the associated effect of R&D investment,the paper mainly discusses the interaction of the two and the impact of spillover effects,found with R&D intensity increasing,industrial agglomeration pollution to the environment may present different degree of change,so R&D between industrial agglomeration and the environmental pollution is not a linear relationship adjustment.After a detailed theoretical analysis,this paper uses the panel data of 30 industrial provinces in China from 2005 to 2015 to empirically investigate the relationship between industrial agglomeration and R&D investment on environmental pollution by using the ordinary panel model and the panel threshold model respectively.This paper firstly investigates the single factor superposition of industrial agglomeration and R&D investment on the linear impact of environmental pollution according to the basic model of common panel model,and then investigates the cross factor of the correlation effect of the two on the linear impact of environmental pollution according to the mediation effect model.However,there is a certain gap between the results obtained and the theory,so on this basis,the paper adopts the panel threshold model to investigate.The results show that the industrial agglomeration level and R&D investment have a significant reverse inhibition effect on environmental pollution,but they are difficult to play a synergistic effect on the inhibition of environmental pollution.The nonlinear test results show that the excessive pursuit of the improvement of industrial agglomeration scale will aggravate the environmental consumption.With the increase of R&D investment intensity,the inhibition effect of industrial agglomeration on environmental pollution shows a fluctuating trend,which first decreases and then increases.Therefore,we should pay attention to the improvement of industrial agglomeration quality,and deal with the relationship among industrial agglomeration,R&D investment and environmental pollution dynamically.
