As the world’s largest developing country and the largest carbon emitter,China must balance economic growth and carbon emission reduction in the process of development. Therefore, improving carbon productivity is an important goal for China at present. At the same time,China’s inward foreign direct investment(IFDI)and outward foreign direct investment(OFDI)have achieved rapid growth under the background of global economic integration and continuous promotion of opening up.This paper uses the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2006 to 2020 as a sample, constructs a geographical distance matrix and an economic geographic weight matrix, and uses a spatial econometric model to explore the impact of twoway FDI on China’s carbon productivity. The innovation of this paper is to study IFDI,OFDI and carbon productivity under the same framework, and consider the interactive effect of IFDI and OFDI on carbon productivity.Through the research, the following conclusions are finally drawn: 1.There is a significant siphon effect in the carbon productivity of each province in China, that is,the carbon productivity of a province will be negatively affected by the carbon productivity of neighboring provinces.2.IFDI has a significant promotion effect on local carbon productivity, but its spatial spillover effect is not significant;OFDI not only has a negative impact on local carbon productivity, but also has a significant negative spatial spillover on carbon productivity in surrounding areas.3.The coordinated development of two-way FDI has a significant promotion effect on China’s carbon productivity, and this promotion effect is mainly realized through positive spatial spillover effects.4.There is regional heterogeneity in the impact of two-way FDI on carbon productivity in China.IFDI has a negative impact on carbon productivity in the eastern region.OFDI has a positive impact on carbon productivity in the eastern region, and negative impacts on the western, southern, and northern regions. The coordinated development of two-way FDI has a positive impact on carbon productivity in the northern region. The research conclusions of this paper can provide some policy guidance for optimizing the opening-up policy and building a dual-cycle development pattern, which will help China make full use of the advantages of the large volume and strong growth potential of two-way FDI,and give full play to the industrial structure optimization effect and technological spillover effect of two-way FDI,so that two-way FDI can better contribute to the improvement of China’s carbon productivity.
