In recent years, thanks to the goal of "high-quality development",my country’s economic development has begun to shift from quantity to quality. How to achieve high-efficiency and low-carbon development has become a hot topic today. As an indicator that takes both economic output and carbon emissions into account, the research on carbon productivity is very important. At the same time, foreign direct investment is an important force to promote my country’s economic development. How to fulfill the "double carbon" commitment from this perspective is crucial to It is of great significance to demonstrate the responsibility of a major country. In addition, due to the spatial and geographical attributes of carbon productivity and foreign direct investment, implementing low-carbon development strategies and strengthening inter-city policy interconnection from this perspective may provide reference for energy conservation and emission reduction.Based on the above realistic background, this paper analyzes the effect of foreign direct investment on urban carbon productivity from the theoretical and empirical aspects. The two mechanisms of foreign direct investment affecting urban carbon productivity are the energy consumption reduction effect and the industrial structure effect. In addition,it also involves the spatial spillover effect of foreign direct investment affecting urban carbon productivity.Secondly,219 prefecture-level cities in my country from 2006 to 2020 are selected as research samples, and a two-way fixed effect model is used to verify the static impact of foreign direct investment on urban carbon productivity. In terms of heterogeneity testing, the sample is divided according to the region and city level, and then the heterogeneity of its impact is studied. In terms of mechanism testing, energy consumption efficiency and industrial structure are used as mechanism variables to verify the internal mechanism of foreign direct investment affecting urban carbon productivity. In addition, this paper also uses the spatial Durbin model to verify the spatial effect of foreign direct investment on urban carbon productivity and performs a robustness test by replacing the matrix. Finally, this paper summarizes the research conclusions and puts forward countermeasures and suggestions.Through analysis and research, this paper draws the following conclusions: the benchmark regression results show that the inflow of foreign direct investment has a significant positive impact on the improvement of urban carbon productivity. The results of the regional heterogeneity test show that increasing foreign direct investment is conducive to improving the carbon productivity of the eastern region, but not conducive to improving the carbon productivity of the central region, while the western and northeastern regions are not significant. The results of the heterogeneity test by city level show that increasing foreign direct investment is conducive to improving the carbon productivity of the first-and secondtier cities, while the third-,fourth-,and fifth-tier cities are not significant. The mechanism test results show that foreign direct investment can improve urban carbon productivity by improving energy consumption efficiency and promoting industrial structure upgrading. The spatial Durbin model regression results show that foreign direct investment not only helps to promote the improvement of local carbon productivity, but also has a significant positive impact on the improvement of carbon productivity in its adjacent areas.
