It had become a universal consensus in the international community to address the global climate system change characterized by climate change and curb global greenhouse gases. As the main consumer of products and services, household carbon emissions had become one of the important sources of global carbon emissions.Due to China’s typical dual economy and social diversity, coupled with differences in urban and rural development levels, economic income, energy use,and other aspects, there were significant differences in the consumption behavior and carbon emissions levels of urban and rural residents. Therefore,it was necessary to explore the influencing factors and willingness to pay of urban and rural household carbon emissions,so as to provide a theoretical basis for formulating targeted carbon emission reduction policies in China. On the basis of reviewing the theories related to sustainable development,low-carbon economy, sustainable consumption, consumer lifestyle approach, and household carbon emissions, this article designed questionnaires and conducted research to collect data.By using carbon emission coefficient method and consumer lifestyle approach, this article calculated carbon emissions of urban and rural households in China, and then compared and analyzed carbon emissions of urban and rural households. On this basis,SPSS 26.0 software was used to store and process data, and through categorical regression models and multiple comparative analysis, influencing factors of carbon emissions from urban and rural households were analyzed and studied,in order to identify high carbon emitting households in urban and rural areas. The following conclusion could be drawn: from the perspective of urban-rural differences, carbon emissions of urban households in China were higher than those of rural households, with both direct and indirect carbon emissions of urban households being higher than those of rural households. From the perspective of emission structure, both urban and rural households had higher indirect carbon emissions than direct carbon emissions. In terms of direct carbon emissions, electricity was the main source of direct carbon emissions for urban and rural households in China. For indirect carbon emissions, carbon emissions generated by urban households in eight consumption categories(food, clothing, housing, household goods and services, education and entertainment, medical care, and other services)were higher than those of rural households, respectively. In addition, for urban households, education level, household income, and transportation means all had significant impact on household carbon emissions. Moreover, urban households with household income over 15000 yuan/month and those primarily using cars or motorcycles as transportation had higher carbon emissions, and their awareness of low-carbon consumption should be raised. For rural households, household income and transportation means had a significant impact on household carbon emissions.Carbon emission reduction activities in rural areas should actively encourage households with incomes over 20000 yuan/month and those who used cars or motorcycles as the main means of transportation to participate. In addition,in order to understand the attitude of urban and rural households towards reducing household carbon emissions,Ordered Probit model model was used to explore the relationship between household carbon emissions and household happiness of urban and rural residents, and life satisfaction approach was used to explore the willingness to pay of urban and rural households to reduce household carbon emissions, which could provide a theoretical basis for more accurate formulation of carbon emission reduction policies. The following conclusion was drawn: reducing household carbon emissions would improve the physical fitness level of urban and rural residents, increase their frequency of physical exercise and reduce the frequency of depression, thereby improving the household happiness of urban and rural residents.Based on the current income levels of urban and rural households, for urban and rural residents was relatively happy,in order to maintain a constant sense of happiness and reduce their household carbon emissions by 1%,willing to pay of urban households were higher than that of rural households. Finally, based on the above research conclusions,it could provide a theoretical basis for the Chinese government to formulate targeted carbon reduction policies.
