Improving the living environment in rural areas is an important task for implementing rural revitalization and a deep expectation of the people. At present, the issue of household waste pollution has become one of the most prominent environmental problems in rural China, directly threatening the ecological environment and the physical and mental health of rural residents. Therefore, accelerating the centralized treatment of rural household waste has become an important way to achieve green development in agriculture and rural areas.Guiding farmers to actively participate in the centralized treatment of rural household waste, improving the quality of rural living environment, and achieving the reduction, harmless, and resource utilization of rural household waste is the fundamental way to promote the construction of rural ecological civilization.Based on the theory of planned behavior, the theory of social capital and the theory of collective action, this paper discusses the impact mechanism of risk perception and social trust on farmers’ participation in the centralized treatment of rural household waste, and uses 2119 micro survey data from four counties(districts)in Handan City,Hebei Province, including Quzhou County,Jize County,Qiu County and Feixiang District,to deeply analyze farmers’ risk perception, social trust and waste treatment status, this paper constructs an indicator system of risk perception and social trust and measures them with factor analysis.Using the binary Logit model and the mediating effect model, this paper empirically discusses the impact of risk perception and social trust on farmers’ participation in rural household waste centralized treatment, and the intermediary role of social trust between the two,and conducts a robustness test of the results. The main research conclusions drawn in this article are as follows:(1)The participation in centralized treatment of rural household waste is relatively high. The specific performance is as follows:77.02%of farmers choose centralized garbage treatment, and 22.98%of farmers do not participate in centralized domestic garbage treatment. The overall participation of farmers is high, but there is still room for improvement.(2)Risk perception and social trust have a significant enhancing effect on farmers’ participation in centralized treatment of household waste. The stronger the risk perception and social trust, the easier it is for farmers to participate in centralized treatment of household waste.(3)Social trust plays a mediating role between risk perception and farmers’ participation in centralized treatment of household waste.Enhance the risk perception level of farmers through social trust, thereby promoting their participation in the centralized treatment of rural household waste.Based on the research findings, this article proposes to construct a diverse publicity system to enhance farmers’ risk perception;Strengthen social trust construction and create a good community environment;Establish a supervision and punishment mechanism to increase participation in centralized treatment of rural household waste,in order to better promote sustainable development of rural environment.
