For more than 40 years of reform and opening up,the rapid development of China’s economy has been accompanied by the acceleration of the urbanization process.As a product of the advanced stage of urbanization,the urban agglomeration are not only the core areas of industrial agglomeration,but also areas with serious ecological and environmental problems.The manufacturing industry has obvious agglomeration characteristics.Manufacturing agglomeration has greatly promoted China’s economic development,but whether manufacturing agglomeration can bring about an improvement in environmental quality remains controversial.Therefore,taking the urban agglomeration as the object,it is of great significance to examine the impact of manufacturing agglomeration on the environment.Based on the systematic review of existing literature,this thesis firstly decomposes the impact of manufacturing agglomeration on the environment into scale effect,technology effect and structural effect,and clarifies the theoretical mechanism of the impact of manufacturing agglomeration on environmental pollution.Secondly,this thesis selects eight national-level urban agglomerations with relatively mature development in China,starting from three levels of urban agglomeration as a whole,each urban agglomeration and its inner cities,measures and analyzes the level of manufacturing agglomeration and environmental pollution.Thirdly,this thesis uses the panel data of 139 cities in eight urban agglomerations from 2007 to 2019 to construct a spatial panel Durbin model and empirically tests the impact of manufacturing agglomeration on environmental pollution.Finally,based on the results of theoretical analysis and empirical testing,this thesis puts forward corresponding policy recommendations.Through the above research,this thesis draws the following conclusions: Firstly,there is a significant spatial spillover effect on environmental pollution in urban agglomeration areas in China,that is,local environmental pollution will be affected by environmental pollution in adjacent areas.Secondly,manufacturing agglomeration has an effect of promoting first and then inhibiting environmental pollution,and the relationship between manufacturing agglomeration and environmental pollution is an inverted "U" curve.Thirdly,the increase in the level of local manufacturing agglomeration will aggravate local environmental pollution and alleviate the environmental pollution of adjacent areas.Local manufacturing agglomeration has a negative spatial spillover effect on environmental pollution in adjacent areas.Fourthly,there are significant differences in the spatial distribution of pollutants and the impact of manufacturing agglomeration on environmental pollution in different urban agglomerations.The innovation of this thesis is that it expands the research scale of industrial agglomeration and environmental pollution,clarifies the mechanism of manufacturing agglomeration on environmental pollution,and constructs a spatial econometric model to empirically test the environmental effects of manufacturing agglomeration in China’s urban agglomeration.
