The development of children’s perceptual qualities is increasingly widely recognised and deeply valued by society, and the perceptual awareness of preschool children is particularly crucial.According to research, most of the existing preschool table and chair furniture designs are dominated by the target needs of parents, mainly pursuing the most basic physiological needs of preschool children in terms of function, ignoring to a certain extent the emotional needs of the users themselves. In the context of society’s gradual emphasis on the comprehensive development of children,it is the focus of this paper to explore the emotional needs of preschool children,to summarise the emotional design strategies of preschool children’s activity tables and chairs, and to design furniture products that meet the needs of this group. This paper takes preschool children as the main research object, and uses the theory of perceptual engineering to summarise the design strategy of preschool children’s activity tables and chairs based on perceptual needs, and verifies the feasibility of the design strategy through design practice.Firstly,by analysing and studying the relevant theories of sensual engineering and understanding its application methods in product design, the design research process in this project is proposed to pave the way for the design strategy of activity tables and chairs for preschool children.Through field research, the existing design issues and trends of children’s tables and chairs are summarised.In-depth analysis of the physiological and psychological characteristics of preschool children is also carried out to prepare the foundation for the design of the experiment. At the same time, the parents’ psychological concerns and design expectations for sensual furniture products are analysed.Secondly, through extensive data collection and data screening work,a preliminary sample of 9 sensual imagery vocabularies and 27 table and chair products was obtained.Through questionnaires and vocabulary picture tests,20 children were selected for the experimental study and a final sample of 5 perceptual imagery words and 4 table and chair products was obtained through questionnaire research.Using the semantic differential method and data analysis work, four groups of semantic evaluation phrases for activity tables and chairs were identified. Finally, the association between the semantic evaluation phrases and the design elements was established to summarise the seven design elements of overall shape, edge contour, storage method, seat form, colour combination, material selection and decoration style, and to construct a design strategy for activity tables and chairs for preschool children.Based on the findings of this paper, the design of activity tables and chairs for preschool children is practised and the feasibility of the design strategy of activity tables and chairs for preschool children based on perceptual needs is verified.
