In recent years, air pollution has become a huge challenge facing the world.China has caused serious air pollution in the process of rapid urbanization.In2020,China ranked 120 out of 180 countries and regions in the global environmental performance assessment ranking. The harsh atmospheric environment continues to exacerbate the "urban disease" problem. In 2012,the Chinese government proposed to build a smart pilot city. This policy not only includes the informatization construction of the city, but also provides a smart solution for China’s environmental governance.Smart cities can make full use of new-generation information technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things to promote environmental pollution.Smart management and control to achieve refined management of elements in urban areas is conducive to preventing and controlling air pollution from the source, and strictly controlling the transmission of air pollution. This paper focuses on the relationship between the construction of smart cities and air pollution.Taking the smart pilot cities established between 2012 and 2014 as the research object,it discusses the relationship between the construction of smart cities and air pollution from both theoretical and empirical aspects. In terms of theoretical analysis, based on the five theories of smart growth,Porter’s hypothesis,Schumpeter’s innovation, external effects and transportation transfer effects, the mechanism of smart city construction on air pollution prevention and control is deeply analyzed from the perspectives of smart transportation, smart industry and economy. In terms of empirical analysis, the panel data of 283 prefecture-level cities in the country from2008 to 2018 was used to build a model based on the multi-period doubling difference method. An empirical test is made on the impact of air pollution brought about by the construction of smart cities. The research results show that the construction of smart cities can significantly suppress air pollution, and this conclusion still holds after robustness tests. In addition, the heterogeneity analysis shows that with the expansion of population size, the positive effect of smart city pilot construction on air pollution shows an inverted "U"-shaped trend of increasing first and then decreasing with the expansion of population size. The possible marginal contributions of this paper are as follows:First, considering that the smart pilot cities were established in three batches between 2012 and 2014,the multi-period difference method was used to estimate.Overcome the fact that only smart pilot cities established in a certain year were considered in previous studies, and the scientificity of estimation was improved to a certain extent.Second, when studying the relationship between the construction of smart pilot cities on air pollution,it is different from the previous literature.Starting from the actual construction path of smart pilot cities,it is more realistic to examine the role of building smart transportation and smart industry economy on air pollution.
