Critical Research On Materializing Morality

The thought of Materializing Morality put forward by Peter-Paul Verbeek,a Dutch technology philosopher,is a theory that has received attention in the field of technology ethics.As a branch derived from the post-phenomenological movement in the field of ethics and sociology,materializing morality reveals its moral role in human moral practice through the non-neutral value characteristics of artificial products.At the same time,in technical design,designers can also engrave some value implication into artificial products,so as to guide and standardize human moral behavior and avoid moral decline.On the basis of following the post-phenomenological interpretation approach,the analytical framework and the critical use of the ideological resources of Don Ihde,and in combination with Michel Foucault’s Micro-power Theory and Bruno Latour’s Actor Network Theory,Verbeek was able to standardize the mediation role of the descriptive "human-technology" relationship into the mediation theory,At the same time,the work of post-phenomenology devoted to the description of technological phenomena will be pushed forward to the topic of "how to design a suitable technological use scenario".The problem that followed was that materializing morality demonstrated the possibility of establishing the above problems,but the lack of attention to the realization way,and the constant encounter of unexpected conditions in the practice situation that the designer could not expect had implied the fracture of the design to practice process.This fracture leads to the traditional concept of technological philosophy,and the remnants of controlism of "technology control(human)" and "(human)control technology" continue to play a role in Verbeek’s conception of technological design.To distance itself from controlism,it is necessary to highlight the"unwillingness of designers" in the practical practice of "moralzing morality",and to re-reflect the thought in a "detour" towards post-phenomenology,which can regain the legitimacy source of the importance of multi-stability in post-phenomenology,and remove Verbeek’s relegation of multi-stability to restore the status and role of the concept in materializing morality.This opens up the vision of materializing morality focusing on technology practice and users.Furthermore,the new perspective can form an integral moral objectification thought with Verbeek’s Materializing Technology which focuses on technical design and designer in Moralizing morality.
