This paper is based on a panel dataset of Chinese prefecture cities,by setting the higher education resources endowment index and connotative growth proxy variables and constructing the econometric model of the relationship between higher education resources with the city connotative growth to empirically test the influence of higher education on economic connotative growth.In addition,the study emphatically discusses the spatial spillover effects,heterogeneity of higher education influences and endogenous problems.The results show that higher education not only promotes the local economic development,but also promotes the economic development of neighboring cities.On average,1 percentage of the resource endowment index of higher education increase the total factor productivity of the city by 2.53 percentages;and the annual growth rate of total factor productivity in neighboring cities where "Double First-Class" universities are located is 0.753 percentage points higher.Further analysis through mediating effect model shows that higher education promotes economic connotation growth by forming human capital,improving the scientific and technological innovation ability of enterprises and society,and enhancing the level of regional urbanization.
