At present, our society is developing towards digitalization. The mobile Internet has begun to penetrate into the middle-aged and elderly people. And the entertaining and immersive characteristics of short video application has enabled it to have a wide range of user groups.Although middle-aged and elderly people are gradually accessing short videos, young people still has an advantage in the mobile Internet. In the past, the position of fathers' discourse power in the family was dispelled, and the contradictions between generations intensified. This generation gap caused by changes in digital media is also reflected in short video applications.Intergenerational incomprehension and gap has evolved into a "digital generation gap" in the digital age.Based on the background of population aging, this study takes short video application as the entry point of the research perspective, and analyzes the use of short video application by young,middle-aged and elderly groups in terms of cognition and usage behavior.Through the difference,we understand the performance and characteristics of the digital generation gap in the use of short video application, and explore the ways to improve the "digital generation gap" in the macro environment. The "digital generation gap" is the embodiment of the digital divide in the generations. This article combines the content of the three "digital gaps" to measure the digital generation gap in the use of short video application, and explore the differences in access, use and literacy between the two generations in the use of short videos.Based on it,I combine personal, family and social factors to fully understand the digital generation gap.In order to understand the performance and characteristics of the digital generation gap in the use of short video application, this study used a questionnaire survey method to distribute two content-related questionnaires to the youth and middle-aged groups.A total of 402 valid questionnaires were recovered. The number of valid questionnaires for youth is 214,and the number of valid questionnaires for middle-aged and elderly people is 188.After analysis by SPSS26.0,there are significant statistical differences between young and middle-aged respondents in terms of access, use and literacy of short video application.Demographic variables such as age, gender, geographical distribution, education level, and income have a certain impact on the different dimensions of the digital generation gap.In addition, through in-depth interviews,I interviewed a total of 20 young and middle-aged respondents in 10 groups of families to understand the differences in the use of short videos by different age groups in family generations, and then explore ways to correctly understand and bridge the digital generation gap. This article believes that the phenomenon of digital generation gap in short video application is a microcosm of the current social generation gap.Short video application helps to present the user's sense of identity, thereby generating opportunities for intergenerational communication, and users can also improve their new media literacy in the process of using it.The "digital backfeeding" in family can help solve the digital generation gap at the micro level. And users themselves should actively strength their understanding of digital technology and information channels.Together with the update of personal concepts, the combination of media and social forces can bridge the digital generation gap from a longer-term perspective.
