Nowadays,science funding plays a more and more important role in scientific research.Countries around the world have also increased investment in scientific research funds,initiated various funding projects to support individuals or institutions,and research evaluations have increasingly valued the role of funding.The number,amount,and type of funding have become an important indicator in various research evaluations such as talent evaluation,university / institution ranking,etc.Funding can optimize resource allocation and cultivate scientific research talents to some extent.At present,due to the difficulty of obtaining,processing,and relative complexity of big data,previous funding research focuses on the overview and performance evaluation in a specific discipline,country / region or specific funding category,and few studies from the perspective of the whole picture.Based on the data of more than 12 million papers from 2009 to 2018,this paper makes a panoramic analysis of 178 disciplines in SCI database from the four perspectives of funding rate,funding rate increase,average number of funds and funding patterns.On this basis,the performance of the 178 disciplines in China and the USA is compared.The results show that during the past 10 years,funding rate and average number of funds have been increasing in all disciplines,from 57.17% to 74.09%,and from 2.57 to 3.21.However,the growth rate and funding pattern of each discipline are different.The overall funding rate of life and earth sciences is on the high side.The highest average number of funds is in the field of medicine and pharmacology,but only in the field of engineering,the average number of funds of two disciplines exceeds 5,namely Physics,Particles & fields,Astronomy & Astrophysics.There are also differences in funding patterns among different disciplines.Most disciplines of computer science are representative of "low funding rate,low average number of funds",but they have maintained a high growth rate on the express train of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.Life and earth sciences and engineering are the representatives of "high funding rate,low average number of funds".For the two funding patterns of "high funding rate,high average number of funds" and "low funding rate,high average number of funds",medicine and pharmacy are more widely distributed all disciplines in the field.At the level of China and the USA,159 disciplines in China exceed the world average funding rate and 158 disciplines exceed the world average in terms of the average number of funds.However,only 120 disciplines in the USA exceed the world average funding rate,and 108 disciplines exceed the world average in terms of the average number of funds.Overall,China is higher in funding rate and average number of funds than the USA.At the level of subject clusters,China pays more attention to the engineering and computer sciences fields,and the USA pays more attention to the life and earth sciences and medicine and pharmacology fields.
