As an emerging discipline, it is just about40years ago when the term Scientometrics was first created. Scientometrics has typically been defined as the quantitative study of science and technology. And lots of mathematical and statistic methods have been introduced to this discipline. The goal of Scientometrics research is to uncover and explain the laws of scientific development and related issues in the process. This discipline has been developping fastly since it was created. With lots of work published in literature, it has also been applied increasingly in many other disciplines. However, in the process of its development, Scientometrics also encounters some problems and challenges. In domestic, Chinese researchers are active in the field of Scientometrics, making China enjoy higher prestige and greater influence in the international arena than ever before. Meanwhile, there also exist many problems in China’s Scientormetrics studies. To fully understand the current situation of domestic and international Scientometrics, this dissertation leverages some new methods from other disciplines to make a comprehensive analysis of domestic and foreign Scientometrics. Our analysis aims to provide insight into deep understanding of Chinese Scientometrics research and the current position and influence of China in the global field. This work is focused on the current academic situation of domestic and international Scientometrics. At the same time, the dissertation pursues completeness and correctness data, innovation and serviceability in methods, and accurate and reliable conclusions. This dissertation studies the entire discipline of Scientometrics as a research object. It studies the status of domestic and international Scientometrics from the following aspects:literature, main research subjects, content of subjects, two most common scientific activities of the main research subjects:citing and co-operation. Study on literature of disciplines and content of subject is based on text. It aims to address a series of problems, such as the distribution law of research output, the objects of Scientometrics, differences on subjects between domestic and international scientometrics, the changing and developing process of Scientometrics subjects, etc. The studies on geography distribution of main subjects and common research activities of main subjects are based on the primary research subjects. It solves the main problems, such as which countries and which institutions and which staff are engaged in Scientometrics? Which country, institution, or researcher is the main force of the Scientometrics research? How is the academic relationship (citing and co-operation) between the main subjects? And how are the differences in every respect domestic and abroad? The dissertation composes of two parts:the introduction and body. The structure consists of seven chapters. It gives a comprehensive presentation of the current academic situation of domestic and international Scientometrics. The dissertation also compares the similarities and differences between China and international colleges. The first chapter discusses some fundamental problems in Scientometrics. First, it elaborates the origin and background of the Scientometrics from the concept of Scientometrics, generation of the discipline, development history and developing process. Then it illustrates the fundamental nature of Scientometrics study from a research objects, research areas and research methods. Finally, it discusses the relations and differences of the Scientometrics and related disciplines. The second chapter introduces the data collection, data processing methods and processes. For data acquisition in a foreign language, the dissertation takes the journal Scientometrics as source of keywords to construct professional term vocabulary. And then based on Latent Semantic Analysis model, it retrieve related professional literatures in word level in well-established vocabulary from76kinds of Library and Information journals published by JCR(2009) of WOS. For Chinese data collection, it starts from "scientometrics" to retrieve a group of related literature from Chinese Journal Full-text database, and then extracts keywords to from the retrieved literature. After filtering out some non-professional words from the vocabulary, it retrieves related literatures from Chinese Social Science Citation (CSSCI). Through the implementation of the above methods, finally4040pieces of literatures in English are collected,3470pieces of literatures in Chinese related to Scientometrics are collected. Compared with previous studies, the amount of literature is the most comprehensive, and the source of the literature is more boarder and relevant.Chapter3studies the distribution of main research object of Scieentometrics. First, it makes statistical analysis on literatures in English for the distribution of them over countries, institutions, journals and authors. Then, it analyzes on Chinese literature from institutions, journals, and authors. The results reveal that the distribution of Scientometrics literature expresses a concentration-scatter trendency. Generally, with the increase of output volume, the amounts of researchers/institutions/countries have the same output showed a decreasing trend. Compared with the international Scientometrics, productivity distribution of China’s Scientometrics research shows a stronger concentration, both in the number of researchs/institutions with low yield and the number of researchers/institutions with high yield are smaller than those of international Scientometrics. China’s Scientometrics shows a rapid development, but there are problems in the development process. The fourth chapter analyzes the distribution and changes of the themes in domestic and international Scientometrics. Word-analysis, co-word analysis and cluster analysis methods are used to analyze the distribution and changes of subject area in domestic and international Scientometrics research. There are similarities and differences between domestic and foreign Scientometrics research theme. The results show that researchers in both China and other countries do a lot of study on scientific output (productivity), scientific journals, academic impact, scientometrics, bibliometrics, reference (citation), scientific cooperation, indicators and evaluation. It indicates that these areas are the core and important theme in Scientomerics research. The differences are mainly reflected on that international Scientometrics research concentrates on science with broader research topics. Howerver, the Scientometrics research scope of China is relatively narrow and less research topics. The fifth chapter addresses citing and cited pattern in domestic and international Scientmetrics. An improved citation analysis method has been used in this dissertation. The method is citation analysis based on PageRank algorithm. The dissertation conducts analysis on citing and cited situation from national level, institutional level and author level. It comes from some important countries major research institutions and important authors in the field of Scientometrics. From the national level, institutional level and author level, the dissertation compares the relationships among PageRank value, citing times, cited times, number of publication output. The results show that the measurement of a same indicator is different when it faces different targets, different research subjects, or different country. In the international field of Scientometrics, the PageRank value, the total number of citations and total citing times show a similar changing trend over the time. However, it shows a trend of fluctuation. At the institutional level, the total cited times and the volume of output are relevant. At the author levels, autor PageRank value and author frequency, corresponding author frequency and of the total weight of an author has no correlation with each other. There is no significant positive/negative relationship between the PageRank value and the author frequency, corresponding author frequency and total author weight, but the author frequency, corresponding author frequency and total author weight shows higher correlationship. On the whole, Chinese Scientometrics institution’s PageRank values, institutions output, total number of cited times show more consistent with each other. Total number of citing and the total number of cited times of Chinese Scientometrics institutions reveal some correlation. The sixth chapter studies the co-operation of domestic and international Scientometrics main research subjects. It starts from the countries, institutions, and author levels to analysis scientific cooperation in international Scientometrics. Then, the dissertation studies on the scientific cooperation form institution level and author level. The results show that Scientometrics scholars in China are active to participate in international cooperation. However, the cooperation rate of and cooperation degree of Scientometrics research institutions are significantly lower than that of international Scientometrics. There is less cooperation between China’s Scientometrics institutions. The cooperation pattern is comparatively single and mutual cooperation intensity is low. The cooperation rate and degree of China’s Scientometrics researchers are also lower than that of international Scientometrics. Finally, Chapter7makes a summary and outlook. This chapater elaborates methods used in this dissertation, the innovations and conclusions are also discussed. Some future research directions based on this dissertation are given. The dissertation is a research result of "Study on the pattern and law of knowledge communication based on author academic relationship"(Grant NO:70973093), which is granted by National Natural Science Foundation of China.
