The Effect Of Family Support On Adolescent Materialistic Values: Chain-mediated Mediation Of Self-esteem And Security

With rapid socioeconomic development and social transformation,values show a trend toward diversification,in which materialism driven by the inflation of material desire is also quiet prevailing in China.Adolescents are in the critical period of value formation and are highly vulnerable to the effects of materialism,which shapes their values,thereby causing undesirable effects on adolescents' physical and mental development.Based on pre-existing theories and research findings,adolescent materialist values are influenced by family support,self-esteem,and a sense of security.Therefore,the aim of this study was to examine the relationship between family support,self-esteem,security and adolescent materialist values,and to examine the mediating role of self-esteem and security in the relationship between family support and adolescent materialist values.Do the following research around the above content:Research 1,revised family support scale.First,the English version of family support scale compiled by Wills and Vaccaro was selected.Secondly,the graduate students of mental health education completed the translation with the help of professors and English majors.Third,324 subjects were selected for the initial test of the scale,and the data results were subjected to item analysis and exploratory factor analysis,the results of which met the criteria of psychometrics.Finally,840 subjects were selected for the scale retest,and confirmatory factor analysis was carried out,the results of which met the psychometric criteria.Research 2,examined the relationship between family support,self-esteem,security,and materialistic values.A questionnaire survey,which included Family Support Scale,Self-esteem Scale,Safety Questionnaire,and Material Values ScaleC,was conducted on 840 high school students in a middle school in Nanning City.The results show that,family support can impact adolescent materialistic values,through the mediation variables of self-esteem and security.And self-esteem and safety also play a chain mediating role between family support and adolescent materialistic values was significant.Finally,based on the research results,educational suggestions for improving the level of family support and preventing the formation of materialistic values in adolescents are put forward.
