In the new situation of Chinese promotion, the number of overseas primary and secondary schools which offer Chinese course and the number of learners of Chinese language have obviously increased. In order to improve the quality of Chinese teaching overseas,it is most important to explore the teaching modes suitable for different countries and regions. In recent years, there is a rapid growth in the number of schools which offer Chinese course and the number of learners learning Chinese in Western Australia, forming a certain scale and characteristics of its own.Among them,Woodvale secondary school set up Chinese course early and has got rich experience in Chinese teaching with remarkable teaching achievement. Two Rocks primary school is a beginner of Chinese teaching and is still in the exploratory stage in all aspects such as teaching program and course arrangement. The situation of the two schools is a typical representative of Chinese teaching in Western Australia. This paper takes the two schools as blueprint and investigates the teaching mode of Chinese in Western Australia. The characteristics and existing problems of Chinese teaching mode are explored from five elements of teaching mode, namely, teaching objectives, teaching ideas, teaching processes, teaching strategies and teaching evaluation. In general, schools in Western Australia advocate student-centered teaching method, emphasize the ability of communication and enhance students’ interest in learning through the integration of cultural elements. The schools focus on classroom activities in the teaching process and encourage students to be the main part of class with the topics as core and the combination of modern teaching methods. In view of the lack of suitable syllabus and unified examination standards as well as the lack of professional teachers and the low retention rate of students learning Chinese, suggestions are given to help the promotion and improvement of basic Chinese teaching in Western Australia. It is expected to provide a reference for Chinese volunteers and public school teachers.
