This paper makes a comparative study of Xue Baocai's character theory in A New Translation of A Dream of Red Mansions criticized by Mongolian critic Hasboo and Wu Yueniang's character theory in the First Strange Book: The Golden Lotus criticized by literary critic of Qing Dynasty Zhang Zhupo. As we all known,Hasbo's literary criticism was influenced by literary critics of Qing Dynasty such as Jin Shengtan,Mao Zonggang, and Zhang Zhupo. Therefore, the criticism of Zhang Zhubo on characters produced a certain influence on Hasbo's criticism on characters and view on literature. On the basis of learning Zhang's way of criticism and view,Hasbo scientifically developed the theoretical system of Zhang, especially distinguishing his outlook on social and life from Zhang through the character Xue Baochai. This paper consists of three parts: introduction, main body and conclusion. The introduction illustrates the reason for selecting the topic, summarizes research results of pioneers such as Hasbo and Zhang Zhupo, and shows the research purpose and methods. The main body consists of three parts.Chapter 1 elaborates the similarities between Hasbo's and Zhang Zhupo's theory on characters.Chapter 2expounds the differences between Hasbo's and Zhang Zhuopo's theory on character.Chapter 3 By comparing Hasbo's and Zhang Zhupo' character theory on Xue Baochai and Wu Yueniang to further explore the origin of Hasbo's and Zhang's humanistic view of society. The conclusion briefly summarizes the content of this paper and the concepts of “opposite” character of Hasbo and Zhang, and further demonstrates the author's point of view that Hasbo is a Mongolian literature critic with county-level thoughts.
