Soseki Natsume(1867-1916)enjoyed the reputation of "Meiji literary giant" in the modern Japanese literary world, and was known as "Mr.Lu Xun of Japan" in the Chinese literary world. He wrote many novels during his short career as a writer. These novels have distinct features in themes and styles at different stages.Sanshiro, the first work in his"Love trilogy",is considered as an important sign of the writer's changing style. The novel describes the study life of a rural youth-SanSiro in Tokyo, interspersed with his confusion about knowledge and love. With the description of brilliance and annoyance in youth, this work doesn't fade yet even after 100 years, and can still bring important inspiration to young people in contemporary society both as a Bildungsroman and a love novel. As early as 1932,Cui Wanqiu first published the Chinese version of Sanshiro. However,it was not the widely accepted translation until the 1980s.Recent years, many translations from different translators have appeared. However, according to our collation of information,it was found that the study on Chinese translations of Sanshiro was very rare and hasn't received sufficient emphasis among many research on the writer in China.Sanshiro, which has been neglected by domestic research, reflects not only vividly Natsume Soseki's ideology, but also outlines the social picture of Japan during 40 or so years in Meiji period.Language is the carrier of culture. The languages of different nationalities record the specific cultural features of those nationalities. There are a large number of cultural load words in the novel, which serves as a great convenience for readers to understand the social background and cultural landscape of Japan at that time. However, due to the cultural differences between different nationalities, the translation of culture loaded words has always been regarded as one of the difficulties in literary translation.Adopting different translation strategies from different translators will obviously produce different translation effects. In order to make an objective evaluation of the translation of culture loaded words in the five Chinese versions, this paper adopts the theory of"translator behavior criticism" put forward by Professor Zhou Lingshun is a further refinement of translation criticism and belongs to the third paradigm of translation criticism. This theory is of great significance to enhance the comprehensiveness and objectivity of translation criticism. The "Truth-seeking,Utility-attaining" Continuum Mode of Evaluation based on this theory can objectively describe the translator's behavior and translation socialization,so as to explain the motivation behind the translator's behavior and contribute to the evaluation of the translation. This paper selects five Chinese versions of Sanshiro to make a comparative study on the translation of culture loaded words in the novel.Based on the "Truth-seeking,Utility-attaining" Continuum Mode of Evaluation by Zhou Lingshun, this paper describes the effect of the translator's behavior and reaction on the translation through the analysis of the degree of truth-seeking and utility-attaining in the five versions.By means of the "Truth-seeking,Utility-attaining" Continuum Mode of Evaluation, this paper finds that the five translators choose different translation strategies in accordance with their differnent translation backgrounds and purposes,so their translations differ with varying degree of truth-seeking and utility-attaining.Among them,Zhang Beilei's translation is obviously more "truth-seeking" and has strong academic characteristics.Li Menghong's translation tends to be more pragmatic, and the characteristics of reader oriented behavior are more obvious.Wu Shuwen,Chen Dewen and Zhu Jiarong have generally shown Utility-attaininghigher than Truth-seeking,but Zhu Jiarong has maintained a better balance between the two.
