The Coherence In Translation Of Mrs. Dalloway From The Perspective Of The "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining"Ontinuum Model Of Evaluation

The coherence is one of the most important features of the text, so the target text should be coherent in the process of translating. As one of the important schools in British and American literature, the novel of stream of consciousness makes translators could hardly take both the style of the original text and the acceptance of the target readers into consideration because of its language full of rhythm and frequent shifts in perspectives. This thesis chooses two Chinese versions of Mrs. Dalloway translated by Gu Qinan and Sun Liang&Su Mei as its study objects. The reason for the selection is that the novel’s unique features such as the irregular usage of language and the crisscross of time and space are translators’ must pay more attention when they translate. This thesis will adopt the classification of Wang Dongfeng’s book Coherence and Translation to divide coherence in translation into four aspects, namely, stylistic coherence, grammatical coherence, semantic coherence and pragmatic coherence to study.In order to judge the coherence in the translation reasonably, this thesis also employs the "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Continuum Model of Evaluation, which was proposed by Professor Zhou Lingshun, to evaluate the translator’s behavior in the translation of novels of conscious stream. The "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Continuum Model of Evaluation figures out that translation criticism should be descriptive. During the process of translating, translator’s behavior is claimed to be in the continuum, so it is dynamic in nature. Based on "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Continuum Model of Evaluation, this thesis makes an analysis of translator’s behavior of "Truth-seeking" as the role of translator at linguistic level and behavior of "Utility-attaining" as social roles. Translators aim to reflect the original language features, as well as cater to the aesthetic expectation of target readers. This thesis will take the "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Continuum Model of Evaluation as the tool, from the perspective of coherence in translation, to analyze translator’s different roles including his role as a pure translation at linguistic level and other social roles and how these roles affect their translation behavior. After the research, this thesis draws the following conclusion:Firstly, in the translation of novels of conscious stream, translators achieve the balance between reflecting the coherence of the original texts into the target texts and making their translations cater to the target language readers. Secondly, the "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Continuum Model of Evaluation compensates for some demerits of prescriptive models and plays a positive role in translation criticism, especially in translation of novels of conscious stream.
