A Study On The Consistency Of English Proposition In NMET Volume Ⅰ In 2019

As one of the important subjects of College Entrance Examination,National Matriculation English Test(NMET)and the contents of the examination paper draw many people’s attention every year.On the other hand,in the process of designing NMET paper,the designers should focus on English curriculum standard,examination outline and so on.English Curriculum Standard for Senior High School(2017),also called New Curriculum,first presents the academic quality standard based on key competency and the designing suggestions for NMET in China.Thus,it is necessary to explore the consistency between NMET and New Curriculum.On the other hand,China’s Standards of English Language Ability(CSE)is the first English proficiency standard covering the whole learning period of education in China.The designers of NMET can also find references from the requirements of CSE to make the examination in accordance with the situation of China and Chinese students.Meanwhile,students can also evaluate their English ability by themselves with the help of the Self-evaluation Scale in CSE.Therefore,it is of great significance to explore the consistency between NMET and CSE.This study mainly discusses the following three aspects: 1)the consistency between NMET Volume one in 2019 and New Curriculum;2)the consistency between NMET Volume one in 2019 and the requirements of CSE;3)the self-evaluation of students’ English ability and its relationship with students’ performance on NMET in 2019.In this study,the author analyzes the whole items of NMET Volume one in 2019,and investigates 402 students’ self-evaluation of English ability in one middle school in Zhangzhou city.The main findings are as follows:1)NMET Volume one in 2019 conforms to the requirements of the compulsory courses and the optional compulsory courses of New Curriculum on the subject context,discourse type,language knowledge and language skills.However,in the examination of cultural knowledge,there are only 3 passages related to cultural factors;at the same time,in the aspect of grammar knowledge,it mainly tests the grammar knowledge of the requirements incompulsory education period,and appositive clauses in optional courses.In terms of the consistency analysis with the English core literacy,NMET Volume one in 2019 examines the students’ linguistic competence and thinking quality from various perspectives,which meets the requirements of the English core literacy,but in the aspect of culture awareness,the examination of cultural knowledge was scarcely involved in the specific test questions.2)NMET Volume one in 2019 is consistent with the requirements of CSE 4,namely,organizational competence,listening,reading and writing ability.Only in the aspect of pragmatic ability,the standard of NMET is higher than that required in CSE 4.3)On the whole,students’ self-evaluation ability is positive.The mean of five dimensions from high to low respectively are reading ability(M=4.74),pragmatic ability(M=3.51),organizational competence(M=3.33),listening ability(M=3.24),and writing ability(M=3.15);the average of students’ questionnaire scores of the high English proficiency group(M=80.71)is higher than that of the medium(M=73.45)and that of the low proficiency group(M=61.84),which indicates that the self-evaluation of students’ English ability increases with their English achievements.In addition,the correlation coefficient between students’ English achievement and self-evaluation of students’ English ability is 0.579,which shows that the higher the students’ English achievement,the higher the self-evaluation of students’ English ability is,and most students can make an appropriate self-evaluation of their English level.On the other hand,it also shows that NMET Volume one in 2019 is consistent with that of CSE 4,and there is a positive correlation between the results of the questionnaire and students’ English scores of NMET Volume one in 2019.According to the research results,the author holds the opinions that the designers of NMET should design more types of cultural factors,and appropriately add cultural knowledge examination questions to the texts;English teachers need to focus on the English curriculum standards closely,use CSE creatively,achieve the consistency among teaching,learning and evaluation,and guide students to self-evaluate;English learners should learn different types of discourse actively,and improve themselves from many aspects,at the same time,learn to reflect on themselves,improve the ability of self-evaluation,and improve the level ofself-learning ability constantly.
