“Chinese Lessons for First Year Students in West China” is a Chinese textbook written by Canadian missionary Omar L.Kilborn.It is one of the few dialect textbooks that taught Chengdu dialect in the early 20 th century.It truly recorded and described the local spoken Chengdu dialect.The arrangement of the texts in the textbooks is based on scenarios.Thirty-two texts correspond to thirty-two scenes of daily life.The text is centered on the example sentences commonly used in the corresponding scene.The target words are listed below the example sentences.As the author of “Chinese Lessons for First Year Students in West China”,Omar L.Kilborn has a dual perspective,one is the perspective of foreign Chinese learners’ learning needs;the other is the perspective of teaching that is most easily understood and mastered by foreign Chinese researchers.From this dual perspective,Omar L.Kilborn’s English notes for the words in the textbook have very unique characteristics.This paper starts with the word annotation of “Chinese Lessons for First Year Students in West China”,mainly discusses the characteristics of word annotation and the shortcomings of word annotation,and roughly divides the eight features and five shortcomings of word annotation in this textbook.The 8 features including: 1.Focus on literal translation of words;2.Focus on the actual meaning of words;3.Focus on the expansion of words;4.Focus on the characteristics of dialect words;5.Focus on the connotation and usage occasions of words;6.Focus on the social and living conditions of Chengdu reflected in the words;7.Focus on the pronunciation of words in Chengdu dialect;8.Focus on the part of speech and grammatical functions of the words.The five shortcomings including: 1.Literal translation causes misunderstanding of words;2.The semantic range of annotations is not equal;3.The annotation format and definition are not uniform;4.The annotations of some grammatical rules are inaccurate;5.The annotations of some words are missing. |
