The spring water public space in Jinan ancient city is an urban public space with the spring as a central spatial element, which laid down the overall outline of the cultural landscape of the Spring City. The spring public space in Jinan ancient city is an important place that forms the macro landscape of "A hill-view city with a lake covering half its area".It contains gardens and streets designed with springs as the core, and the humanistic scenery and springs are symbiotic, closely linked and harmonious.Jinan exists and thrives because of the spring. The spring public space in this ancient city has unique ecological, living, historical and cultural values, and is a bridge to build a harmonious relationship between "people-spring-city".However,with the change of time, the spring public space of Jinan ancient city is increasingly severed from the residents of the Spring City. There are problems that the spring public space in Jinan ancient city ignores the needs and opinions of the residents.Meanwhile, the residents lack perception and recognition of the space. In the face of the development requirements of time to build a park city and promote the declaration for the World Cultural Heritage of the Spring City and its Cultural Landscapes in the new era,as well as the practical needs of alleviating the contradiction between residents and springs,it is of great significance to optimize the spring public space in Jinan ancient city. This study firstly, based on sorting out and reviewing the research progress of landscape perception evaluation and spring public space, determined the Semantic Differential Method as the core method of landscape perception evaluation.Through literature research, the inspiration of spatial optimization was obtained from the theory of park cities, urban renewal, environmental psychology and landsenses ecology. Then, using the Semantic Differential Method,a test was conducted to evaluate the landscape perception of the spring public space.Nine spring public spaces were selected as samples: Baotu Spring,Five-dragon Pool,Daming Lake, the Moat,Palace Pond Street-Xigengdao Street-Qushuiting Street,Furong Street,Qifengqiao Street,Qiming Street-Shui Hutong and Quancheng Square. The samples were synthesized with literature and fieldwork data to outline the status of the sample landscape elements.A total of 26 sets of adjective pairs in both physical and psychological dimensions were selected, and a five-level evaluation scale was established, with two experimental groups, the resident group and the tourist group, were set up to conduct the evaluation test by distributing questionnaires on site, and SPSS and EXCEL were used for data calculation, statistics and analysis. The results of the evaluation indicated that the evaluators are generally satisfied with the spring public space of Jinan ancient city, and that the residents' perception of the spring public space in the ancient city of Jinan is more sensitive than that of tourists, and the difference between the two groups was greater in the psychological perception dimension than in the physical perception dimension. The data were used to interpret the landscape elements that need to be optimized in each spring public space, and the samples,Furong Street spring public space and Qiming Street-Shui Hutong spring public space are in urgent need to be improved. Finally, based on the above findings and the five optimization principles: people-oriented,holistic,original,micro-renewal and ecological, three optimization strategies are proposed: the spring public space as a whole, material and non-material elements, including continuing the spatial texture and mending spatial relationships, enhancing the five senses of experience and attaching importance to emotional participation, emphasizing spring elements and enriching waterfriendly spaces, dealing with traffic conflicts and repairing chronic systems, and exploring the cultural heritage of the site and promoting cultural tourism. The 12 detailed strategies are annotated with a model diagram, with a view to providing some reference for the renewal of the public space of Jinan's ancient spring and even for the urban renewal of Jinan and the construction of a park city.
